Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Well
By four o’clock that afternoon, Grant’s penthouse smelled of burned coffee and raw panic.
The front entrance of the building was mobbed by paparazzi and financial correspondents shouting questions every time a delivery arrived. Inside, Madison paced the living room floor in tears, clutching her designer robe around her waist, while Evelyn barked orders into her phone to public relations strategists who offered little hope.
"They're calling it the 'Bennett Coup,'" Madison sobbed, collapsing onto the sofa. "Grant, my mother called me from Palm Beach. Her friends are asking why our wedding announcement was pulled from the Sunday paper! You said we would announce the formal gala next week!"
Grant stood by the bar, staring into an untouched glass of scotch. He looked entirely hollowed out. The stock had halted trading twice due to volatility, and three institutional lenders had already frozen Whitmore Group’s short-term credit lines pending an intellectual property review.
"Stop talking about the wedding, Madison," Grant said, his tone dangerously flat.
"How can you say that?" she shrieked, tears streaking her mascara. "I am carrying your children! The Whitmore heirs! You promised me I wouldn't have to hide like a secret anymore!"
"There won't be an inheritance for any heirs if the company defaults on Friday," Evelyn snapped, ending her call and glaring at Madison with cold disdain. "Be quiet, girl. Your hysterics are giving me a migraine."
Madison shrank back, her lower lip trembling. The warmth and flattery Evelyn had lavished on her when she was just a convenient weapon to displace Claire had evaporated the moment the money came under threat.
The private elevator chime sounded, and Marcus Hayes stepped into the penthouse. The corporate attorney looked haggard, his briefcase bulging with fresh filings.
"Tell me we have grounds for an emergency injunction," Evelyn demanded, stepping toward him. "We claim breach of fiduciary duty. We freeze her assets."
Marcus shook his head slowly. "It’s worse than that, Evelyn. We pulled the original trust documents from Claire’s father’s estate in 2011. There is no legal ambiguity. But that isn't the primary reason I came in person."
Grant turned around, his eyes narrowing. "What is it, Marcus?"
Marcus hesitated, casting a nervous glance toward Madison before pulling a sealed manila envelope from his case. "Three days before the divorce papers were served, Claire's private investigators submitted a formal audit request to the compliance committee regarding our internal offshore accounts. Specifically, the accounts managing the corporate trust for the unborn twins."
Madison’s posture went rigid. The color vanished from her face faster than it had from Grant's at the summit.
"What trust?" Grant asked, stepping forward with sudden focus. "I haven't authorized an offshore trust for Madison yet. We agreed to wait until the paternity filings and birth certificates were registered."
"Someone did," Marcus said quietly, opening the folder. "Over four point eight million dollars was transferred out of our European subsidiary over the last six months, routed through an LLC registered in the Cayman Islands under the name 'Vance & Sterling Partners.' But the beneficiary isn't your children, Grant. The beneficiary is registered under Madison’s maiden name—and a co-signatory named Julian Vance."
Grant froze. "Julian Vance? Arthur Vance's nephew?"
Madison tried to stand, her breathing erratic. "Grant... Grant, it's not what it looks like. I was just... I was trying to protect our future because your mother kept threatening the prenuptial terms—"

"You stole from my company?" Grant whispered, stepping toward her, his voice shaking with a terrifying blend of rage and realization.
"She didn't just steal from your company, Grant," Marcus added in a low voice, looking down at the final page in the file. "Arthur Vance's office just delivered a subpoena to our legal department. Claire isn't just taking back the patents. She’s filing criminal fraud charges against Madison tomorrow morning."
