Chapter 1 - The Conversation I Was Never Supposed to Hear
Nora Bennett thought she was coming home early to surprise her husband.
Instead, she walked into the lake house she had bought with her own money years before marriage and overheard Ethan, his parents, and his sister discussing how to turn her generosity into permanent ownership.
They called it “estate planning.”
They talked about adding Ethan to the deed.
They discussed Ray putting sixty thousand dollars into renovations after the transfer.
Judith talked about spending part of retirement there.
And everyone had apparently been included in the conversation except Nora.
When Ethan later tried to present the plan to her over dinner as an innocent estate-planning appointment, Nora revealed that she had heard everything.
She canceled Thursday’s appointment.
Then she gave him one chance.
“Tomorrow,” she said, looking directly into her husband’s eyes, “you can explain exactly what this is—in front of everyone who helped you plan it.”
Ethan stared at her across the dining table.
For the first time since Nora had known him, the charming, confident man who could talk his way through almost any uncomfortable situation looked genuinely afraid.
And Nora realized something that frightened her even more.
