Chapter 11 - The Woman Who Finally Told the Truth

Wyatt covered the baby with his body.

Agent Ellis fired toward the darkness.

David disappeared behind a concrete column.

Dr. Ward lay beside me, struggling to breathe.

“Pressure on the wound,” Mara ordered.

I pressed a folded cloth against the doctor’s chest while Wyatt carried my newborn toward the tunnel exit.

David fired again.

The bullet struck the wall near Wyatt’s head.

Federal agents returned fire.

David retreated deeper into the passage.

Mara remained beside us until a tactical team arrived, then followed them into the tunnel.

Paramedics transported Dr. Ward and me to the hospital.

My son was placed in the neonatal intensive care unit.

He weighed four pounds, eight ounces.

His lungs were underdeveloped, but doctors said his condition was encouraging.

I named him Michael Ethan Brooks.

Michael for the brother I had known.

Ethan for the brother Wyatt had lost.

I did not use the Mercer name.

David remained missing.

The tunnel connected to three storm drains, a utility corridor, and an underground garage. Investigators found blood near one exit but no body.

Charles refused to reveal where his son might go.

Susan Mercer appeared on television and called the allegations “a coordinated attack against a respected American family.”

Then Dr. Ward survived surgery.

Two days later, she requested federal protection and agreed to testify.

Her confession lasted seven hours.

She admitted that Charles had funded illegal genetic testing.

She admitted that Michael had been held captive for nearly two years after his staged death.

He had been forced to provide samples and sign trust documents.

“Is he alive?” Wyatt asked.

We sat inside a protected hospital conference room.

Dr. Ward looked older than she had at the clinic. Tubes ran beneath her gown, and her voice remained weak.

“I don’t know.”

“When did you last see him?”

“Six years ago.”

“Before Rachel died?”

“Yes.”

She began crying.

“Rachel discovered him in a private medical facility. She planned to free him.”

“What facility?” Mara asked.

“Mercer Ridge.”

Charles owned a remote rehabilitation center under that name.

It had closed five years earlier after a landslide damaged the access road.

“Did Rachel reach him?” Wyatt asked.

“She tried.”

Dr. Ward wiped her face.

“David followed her. He forced her car off the road.”

Wyatt looked away.

I reached for his hand.

He allowed me to hold it.

“What happened to Michael?” I asked.

“Charles moved him.”

“Where?”

“I was never told.”

Dr. Ward revealed another secret.

My mother had not died accidentally.

Susan Mercer had entered Evelyn’s house with two men.

They searched for the financial evidence and set the fire when they failed to find it.

David waited outside in the car.

“He watched my mother’s house burn?”

Dr. Ward nodded.

“He had already seen your photograph. Charles believed Evelyn might have mailed evidence to you, so David was ordered to build a relationship with you.”

Every part of my marriage had been planned.

David chose the coffee shop where we “accidentally” met.

He researched my friends.

He learned what books I liked.

He pretended to love the same music.

He proposed quickly so he could access my belongings.

When he failed to find the evidence, he stayed because Charles decided I might inherit Michael’s portion of the trust.

“Why did David become abusive?” Claire asked.

Dr. Ward looked at me.

“Because the operation required him to act devoted. He resented you for the role he had to play.”

The truth was cruel, but it also freed something inside me.

I had spent years trying to understand what I did wrong.

Nothing.

There had been no perfect version of me capable of making David kind.

His kindness had only ever been a costume.

Dr. Ward also confirmed that the baby’s genetic material had been used without my consent.

“The transfer happened during the procedure,” she said. “David told you it was scar-tissue removal.”

“Why did you do it?”

“Charles threatened my daughter.”

“Where is she?”

“She died three years ago from leukemia.”

Dr. Ward closed her eyes.

“I continued obeying him even after there was no one left to protect.”

Mara leaned forward.

“Then help us end it.”

Dr. Ward gave investigators account numbers, names, and hidden properties.

One property stood out.

A hunting lodge in Black Hollow owned through a shell company.

Charles had once used it to hold witnesses.

Federal agents prepared a raid.

Wyatt insisted on accompanying them as a civilian consultant because he recognized old maps of the property from Rachel’s notes.

I wanted to go.

Everyone refused.

“You just gave birth in a tunnel,” Claire reminded me.

“My brother may be there.”

“And your son is here.”

She was right.

For the first time, protecting someone I loved meant staying rather than running toward danger.

That evening, I sat beside Michael Ethan’s incubator.

His tiny hand wrapped around the tip of my finger.

“You are not an heir,” I whispered. “You are not evidence. You do not belong to any company or family trust. You belong to yourself.”

Wyatt entered wearing a tactical vest beneath his coat.

“We’re leaving for Black Hollow.”

“Bring him home.”

“If he’s there, I will.”

He looked through the incubator glass.

“Rachel would have loved him.”

“I wish she could have known him.”

“So do I.”

A nurse entered with a package addressed to me.

There was no return address.

Security opened it.

Inside was the fourteen-dollar baby blanket from the store.

I had left the original with the police.

This one was identical.

A card rested on top.

You took my name from him. I’ll take everything else.

On the back was a photograph of Claire entering the hospital parking garage ten minutes earlier.

I turned toward the chair where my sister had been sitting.

It was empty.

Her coat remained draped across the back.

My phone rang.

David’s voice came through.

“Tell Wyatt to leave Black Hollow alone.”

“Where is Claire?”

“Close enough to hear you.”

A frightened breath sounded behind him.

May you like

“David, this is over.”

“No, Anna. This ends when you bring my son to me.”
