Chapter 6 - The Cup of Tea I Never Questioned

The medical investigation took weeks.

Those weeks nearly broke me.

Not knowing is its own form of violence.

Every memory became suspicious.

Tea.

Vitamins.

Food.

Headaches.

Evelyn standing beside my hospital bed.

Daniel calling from Singapore.

His voice sounded devastated.

Had he been?

I wanted the answer to be no.

Not because I wanted Daniel back.

Because some betrayals are too monstrous to absorb comfortably.

The toxicology question could not be answered directly after three years.

But purchase records could.

Evelyn had ordered an unregulated herbal preparation from an overseas seller.

The product contained ingredients associated with pregnancy risk.

That did not prove intent.

Then investigators recovered deleted messages from Martin's cloud backup.

Evelyn:

How much?

Martin:

Don't be stupid over text.

Evelyn:

I only need to know whether it works.

Martin:

Nothing guaranteed. Stop discussing this.

Date:

Nine days before my miscarriage.

My hands shook.

Daniel wasn't in that exchange.

Then another message.

Daniel to Evelyn:

Claire's sick. What did you give her?

Evelyn:

Tea.

Daniel:

What was in it?

Evelyn:

Something to settle things.

Daniel:

What does that mean?

No answer.

Then Daniel called his mother seven times.

He called Martin four.

And boarded an early flight home.

I had forgotten that.

He told me his Singapore meetings ended early.

He arrived at the hospital the morning after the miscarriage.

He cried beside my bed.

Real tears.

Maybe because he knew.

Maybe because he suspected.

Maybe because he finally understood what his family had done.

Naomi looked at me.

"This does not establish Daniel participated."

"But he hid his suspicion."

"Possibly."

"Why?"

"We need him to answer that."

He did.

During a deposition.

For once, Daniel had no performance left.

"I suspected my mother."

"At the time?" Naomi asked.

"After Claire went to the hospital."

"Did you tell doctors?"

"No."

"Police?"

"No."

"Your wife?"

"No."

"Why?"

Daniel looked at me.

I felt nothing warm.

"I was afraid."

"Of what?"

"Everything collapsing."

There it was.

Again.

Money.

Reputation.

Family.

Always protected before me.

"You let me believe I lost our baby because my body failed."

His face crumpled.

"Claire—"

"Answer."

"Yes."

My vision blurred.

"Your mother called me barren."

He closed his eyes.

"Yes."

"You let her."

"Yes."

"Knowing she might have caused it."

He started crying.

"Yes."

I leaned back.

That was the moment Daniel permanently disappeared from my heart.

Not the affair.

Not the slap.

Not the money.

This.

He may not have harmed our baby.

But he protected the woman he suspected might have.

There are silences that become actions.

His was one.

Evelyn was arrested two days later after investigators uncovered additional evidence showing she knowingly purchased the preparation and lied about its contents.

Prosecutors would decide exact charges.

I stopped following every legal update.

I had learned something important.

Justice could proceed without requiring me to watch every wheel turn.

Meanwhile, DRC began collapsing.

Three major clients left after learning its financial statements depended heavily on undisclosed related-party financing.

Daniel resigned.

The board appointed an interim CEO.

Then the company filed restructuring papers.

News sites called it "the Carter Empire Collapse."

Empire.

Funny.

May you like

There had never been an empire.

Just my money wearing Daniel's name.
