Chapter 11 - The Board Asked Me Back

Northstar's independent ethics review cleared me of retaliatory conduct.
It found I had properly disclosed conflicts, recused where appropriate, and avoided directing David's employment outcome.
Samuel called.
“We want you fully reinstated.”
“I never resigned.”
“You know what I mean.”
I smiled.
I returned to the board.
But I changed one thing.
Northstar created a workplace power-and-conduct committee independent of executive reporting lines.
Anonymous reporting alone wasn't enough.
Employees needed safe escalation outside local chains of command.
Lena Brooks joined an advisory panel.
Jason participated too.
Not because he had been brave from the beginning.
Because he hadn't.
His training sessions focused on bystander failure.
He said:
“I thought staying out of it made me neutral. It made me useful to the person causing harm.”
That sentence stayed with me.

We didn't name David.
We didn't need to.
