Chapter 9 - My Mother's Empty Car

Mom's car was found outside a cemetery.
The same cemetery containing Daniel's empty grave.
Her phone lay on the driver's seat.
I received a video.
Mom sat inside an unfamiliar room.
Hands bound.
Daniel stepped into frame.
“Families shouldn't fight over money.”
I almost laughed at the insanity.
He demanded I sign voting proxies.
Rebecca said:
“You cannot.”
“That's my mother.”
“And signing may not save her.”
Police were searching.
Daniel sent another message.
MIDNIGHT.
Then Mom did something extraordinary.
She looked directly at the camera and said:
“Emma, remember your grandfather's red box.”
Daniel struck her.
The video ended.
Red box.
I remembered.
Grandfather kept old corporate seals in a red document box.
We opened it.
Inside was an original trust amendment.
A provision nobody had considered relevant in decades.
If any beneficiary's voting rights were obtained through coercion, fraud, incapacity manipulation, or kidnapping, those rights automatically transferred temporarily to an independent trustee.
Daniel could force me to sign.
It wouldn't help him.
Grandfather had designed the trust for exactly the kind of man Daniel was.
We told nobody.
At 11:45, I went to the meeting location wearing a wire.
Not alone.
May you like
Never alone.
Daniel simply needed to believe I was.
