Chapter 14 - The Last Sterling Letter

Ten years after my first wedding, a letter arrived.
Beatrice.
I almost discarded it.
Then opened it.
Claire,
I have spent years believing you destroyed my family.
Strong opening.
I continued.
It took me too long to admit that everything you exposed already existed before you arrived.
Better.
She wrote about Arthur.
They divorced.
Cynthia rebuilt a quieter life and worked a real job for the first time.
Julian had moved after completing his sentence and supervision.
He worked outside finance.
Beatrice wrote:
I thought strength meant controlling what people saw.
You taught me that control is not strength.
I wish I had learned before I taught my children otherwise.
Then:
I watched my son hit you.
I did nothing.
There is no explanation that improves that fact.
I stopped.
Years earlier, I wanted those words.
Now they arrived after I no longer needed them.
Maybe that was why I could receive them.
She ended:
I do not ask forgiveness. I only wanted, once in my life, to say the true thing without asking what it would cost me.
Beatrice Sterling.
I showed Noah.
“Are you going to respond?”
“I don’t know.”
A week later, I did.
One sentence.
I hope you keep doing that.
No forgiveness.
No reunion.
No invitation.
May you like
Just acknowledgment.
That was enough.
