Chapter 9 - The Purge of the Empire

Forty-eight hours after the courthouse confrontation, the reconstruction began.

I sat in the corner office on the sixtieth floor of the Monroe Tower, the panoramic glass walls looking out over a brilliant, clear New York skyline. The nameplate on the door no longer read Chase Hospitality Group. It had been restored to its rightful origin: The Monroe Foundation & Global Holdings.

Marcus Vance placed a thick stack of final legal binders on my desk with a satisfying thud.

"Charles Monroe entered a preliminary plea agreement with the Southern District of New York an hour ago," Marcus reported, adjusting his glasses. "In exchange for avoiding maximum sentencing, he has surrendered all claims to family trusts, resigned every directorship, and forfeited ninety million dollars in personal offshore assets to reimburse the foreign clearinghouse escrow."

"And Sloane?" I asked, signing the first execution document.

"Sloane was denied bail due to flight risk. The forensic audit discovered she had embezzled over eight million dollars through dummy shell companies with Charles's help. She’s looking at seven to ten years in federal custody. The family court has placed Jasper with Sloane’s sister in Connecticut, fully funded through your anonymous educational endowment."

I paused, setting my pen down. "And Preston?"

Marcus permitted himself a rare, razor-thin smile. "His fall from grace has been absolute. The emergency family court judge formally dismissed the adoption petition with prejudice, voided the fraudulent spousal acknowledgment, and referred the forgery evidence directly to the District Attorney for criminal indictment. Furthermore, the court granted your emergency motion for sole legal and physical custody of Lily. His parental rights have been suspended pending psychological evaluation and the outcome of his criminal trial."

"What about his personal liabilities?"

"Every bank in North America called his personal loan guarantees the moment his suspension went public," Marcus answered, flipping to a financial summary sheet. "His personal accounts have been seized, his lease on the luxury vehicle fleet was terminated, and the bank foreclosed on his private estate in the Hamptons this morning. He is entirely broke, unemployable, and facing a minimum of three years in state prison for corporate forgery."

I took a deep breath, feeling the heavy, suffocating weight that had lingered over my chest for months finally evaporate. For seven years, I had shrunk myself to allow Preston to feel tall. I had played the quiet, obliging wife in the background while he built a fantasy of power using my family's sweat and blood.

That chapter was closed forever.

"Send the final dissolution papers to his court-appointed public defender," I instructed Marcus, signing the last page of the divorce decree. "Our business with Preston Chase is concluded."

"With pleasure, Evelyn," Marcus replied, gathering the binders and offering a respectful nod before leaving the office.

I stood up from behind the desk and walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows. The city below moved at its relentless, unyielding pace, but for the first time in my life, I wasn't watching it from behind someone else's shadow.

I picked up my phone and dialed the house.

"Hello, Mommy!" Lily’s bright, sweet voice piped through the speaker, washing away every trace of darkness that had poisoned our lives.

"Hello, my sweet girl," I smiled, feeling a warmth in my heart that no boardroom victory could ever match. "Are you ready for your surprise?"

May you like

"Yes! Thomas said we’re going to the park and getting strawberry ice cream!"

"We certainly are," I said softly, my eyes misting with tears of pure relief. "Mommy is coming home right now."
