Chapter 18 - The Box on the Porch

Police arrived before we did.
The box wasn't explosive.
Somehow, that didn't make it less frightening.
Inside was a single object.
A woman's silver bracelet.
And beneath it, a photograph.
Claire.
Alive.
The photograph had been taken recently.
Very recently.
She stood outside a grocery store holding a paper bag.
Her hair was gray.
Her face older.
But Ruth recognized her instantly.
“Oh my God.”
She covered her mouth.
“That's Claire.”
I stared at the photograph.
The timestamp in the corner was twelve days old.
Claire hadn't died in 2004.
She had survived.
But someone had known where she was for twenty-two years.
On the back of the photograph, five words had been written in black ink.
SHE REMEMBERS WHAT YOU DID.
That night, nobody slept.
By morning, Victoria had used every legitimate investigator she knew.
By afternoon, we had a location.
Claire Dawson lived under another name in Vermont.
And before sunset, Victoria and I were on a plane.
We found her the next morning.
She opened the door, looked at me, and immediately tried to close it.
“Claire.”
She froze.
“I know about Margaret.”
The door stopped.
I heard breathing on the other side.
Then:
“Go away.”
“My name is Emily Carter.”
Silence.
“Andrew Vance was my husband.”
The door slowly opened.
Claire looked at my leg.
Her face collapsed.
“No.”
I understood immediately.
She knew.
She had seen the news.
Maybe she had watched the trial.
“Margaret did this,” I said.
Claire gripped the doorframe.
“She did it again.”
Victoria stepped forward.
“We need to talk about 2004.”
Claire saw her.
And screamed.
Not in fear.
In rage.
“You.”
Victoria recoiled.
Claire pointed directly at her.
“You Sterling people destroyed my life.”
“Claire, I—”
“Get off my property.”
“My brother—”
“Your brother?”
Claire laughed bitterly.
“You think Richard Sterling was the only Sterling involved?”
Victoria stopped breathing.
“What are you talking about?”
Claire stared at her.
“You really don't know.”
“Know what?”
Claire looked from Victoria to me.
Then she said the sentence that changed the investigation completely.
“Richard wasn't working alone.”
Victoria's voice dropped.
“Who was helping him?”
May you like
Claire looked directly into her eyes.
“Your father.”
