Chapter 9 - The Fall of Beacon Hill

The metallic click of the handcuffs ratcheting around Sandra Prescott’s wrists sounded like a final, unappealable verdict.

She didn't cry. She didn't bow her head. Even as the state detectives secured her wrists behind her back, her eyes burned with psychotic arrogance.

“You think you’ve won, Daniel?” Sandra hissed, her voice trembling with venom as she was escorted past the board of trustees toward the double doors. “You think you can erase me? I built the Prescott name in this city! Without me, you are nothing! You’re just a bleeding-heart doctor married to white trash!”

Daniel didn't even blink. He adjusted his cuff links, stepped aside to let the officers lead her out, and watched her go with the absolute indifference one reserves for a stranger.

Beside her, Arthur Vance offered no resistance whatsoever. The once-mighty corporate litigator looked utterly broken, his shoulders slumped, his gaze fixed permanently on the carpeted floor as another detective escorted him out of the room. Julian remained frozen in the corner of the boardroom, weeping uncontrollably into his hands, abandoned by the two people who had orchestrated his entire fraudulent life.

Thomas Sterling, the senior trustee, slowly removed his reading glasses and wiped his forehead with a trembling handkerchief. He looked down at Arthur’s codicil, then looked up at Daniel.

“Daniel,” Sterling said, his voice cracking with emotion. “On behalf of the entire board... we are horrified. We trusted Sandra. We trusted Vance. We had no idea they had leveraged the Boylston properties or that Julian’s fund was an offshore sinkhole. If Arthur had not left this codicil in Clara’s hands, this entire institution would have collapsed into bankruptcy within twelve months.”

“The collapse stops today, Thomas,” Daniel replied, stepping up to the head of the table. “Under the authority granted to me by my father’s codicil, I am officially assuming the role of primary executor of the Prescott Heritage Trust. My first official act is to freeze all accounts tied to Julian’s shell companies, initiate a full forensic audit of every transaction made over the last eight years, and file an immediate civil petition to seize Sandra’s personal assets to reimburse the trust’s losses.”

The trustees nodded in unanimous, silent agreement. There was no need for a formal vote. The power dynamic had shifted completely, irrevocably, and permanently.

An hour later, Daniel, Clara, and I stood on the granite steps outside the State Street Financial Center.

My phone buzzed in my coat pocket. It was a text notification from the Boston Chronicle.

BREAKING NEWS: Beacon Hill Matriarch Sandra Prescott and High-Profile Attorney Arthur Vance Arrested on Felony Fraud, Larceny, and Child Abuse Charges. Prescott Heritage Trust Executorship Transferred to Pediatric Surgeon Dr. Daniel Prescott.

Beneath the headline was a photograph of Sandra being led out of the office tower in handcuffs, her face twisted in rage, flanked by state troopers. The comment sections were already exploding with thousands of shares, public condemnation, and vindication for our family. The narrative Sandra had tried so desperately to weaponize against us had turned around and crushed her under its own weight.

“Where is Ava right now?” Clara asked, pulling her wool coat tighter against the brisk afternoon breeze.

“She’s at my sister’s house in Cambridge,” I answered, a profound sense of relief washing over me like warm sunlight. “Doing her homework, baking chocolate chip cookies, and being a regular twelve-year-old girl who doesn't have to worry about sociopaths in diamonds.”

Daniel reached over, taking my hand in his, his fingers warm and strong. “There is one more thing we need to do today, Maya.”

“What’s that?”

Daniel looked toward the historic brownstones of Beacon Hill visible in the distance. “We need to go to Sandra’s house. The court granted Clara an emergency writ of possession for the estate properties. We need to collect my father’s personal belongings, change the locks, and make sure that woman never sets foot inside that dining room ever again.”
