Chapter 5 - The Family Meeting

Nathan did not run.

That was the first thing that told me he was still under Judith’s control.

He simply stood there while his mother rolled down the window.

Vanessa walked around the SUV and said something I couldn’t hear.

Nathan shook his head.

Then Judith spoke.

Even through the glass of the diner window, I watched my husband change.

His shoulders dropped.

His anger disappeared.

He became a boy again.

I had seen it hundreds of times.

Judith never needed to scream.

She only had to remind her children who had raised them, what they owed her, and what would happen if they betrayed the family.

Nathan got into the SUV.

Detective Brooks followed them.

Two hours later, she called me.

“They went to your house.”

“My house?”

“Yes.”

“Can they be there?”

“You haven’t legally barred your husband yet.”

“I want that done.”

Miriam was already preparing it.

By evening, a temporary protective order was filed based on the assault, threats, and suspected financial crimes.

Nathan could not return.

Vanessa and Judith were prohibited from contacting me.

The next morning, police executed a search warrant on Greg Mallory’s warehouse.

What they found changed everything.

There were boxes of financial records.

Copies of my bank statements.

Photographs of my house.

My children’s school schedule.

A printed map showing the route from my office to home.

And a folder labeled E.C.

Emily Cole.

Inside were insurance documents.

Vehicle records.

And a photograph of me getting into my car.

Miriam went silent when she saw it.

Detective Brooks did not.

“This has moved beyond financial fraud.”

“What do you call it?”

“A potential murder conspiracy.”

My legs went weak.

I sat down.

Brooks continued.

“We also found chemicals.”

“What kind?”

“Nothing illegal by itself. But some could be used to contaminate food.”

I stared.

My anniversary dinner.

The dinner I had spent three days preparing.

“Was someone planning to poison me?”

“We don’t know.”

Then she hesitated.

“There’s more.”

Police had recovered deleted files from Greg’s laptop.

One was a voice recording.

Judith.

Her voice was unmistakable.

Calm.

Precise.

“If Emily refuses the transfer, we need another path.”

A man—Greg—responded.

“What kind of path?”

Judith said, “The policy becomes relevant if she isn’t here to contest anything.”

My skin went numb.

The recording continued.

Greg asked, “You want me to scare her?”

Judith answered.

“I want the family protected.”

Greg laughed.

“That’s not an answer.”

Judith waited.

Then said, “It’s the only answer you’re getting.”

Miriam stopped the audio.

“That may not be enough for attempted murder.”

Brooks nodded.

“Not alone.”

“But with the brake line?”

“Stronger.”

“What about Vanessa?”

Brooks looked at me.

“We found messages between Vanessa and Greg.”

My stomach tightened.

“About me?”

“About money.”

The messages showed Vanessa demanding repayment from Greg.

Not paying him.

Demanding money from him.

That confused all of us.

Until Daniel traced the flow.

Greg had not merely been Judith’s hired fixer.

He had been stealing from them too.

He had diverted nearly nine hundred thousand dollars out of Halcyon.

Suddenly his death had several possible motives.

Vanessa wanted the money back.

Judith needed silence.

Nathan knew too much.

Maybe Greg had threatened all of them.

That evening, Nathan violated the protective order.

Not by coming near me.

By calling Sophie’s tablet.

She answered before I could stop her.

“Daddy?”

I heard his voice.

“Sweetheart, I love you.”

Sophie looked at me.

I took the tablet.

“You cannot contact us.”

“Emily, please.”

“I’m hanging up.”

“Wait. Greg recorded everything.”

“I know.”

“No. Everything.”

I paused.

“What are you talking about?”

“He recorded our family meetings.”

“Why?”

“Insurance.”

“Against you?”

“Against Mom.”

Nathan lowered his voice.

“There’s a safe in Vanessa’s office at the catering company.”

“Tell the police.”

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because they’ll arrest me too.”

“For what?”

Silence.

Then the truth.

“I helped move the money.”

I closed my eyes.

“How much?”

“All of it.”

There it was.

No more excuses.

No more helpless husband.

No more man caught between his wife and his mother.

Nathan had participated.

Maybe he had not cut my brake line.

Maybe he had not bought the policy.

But he had stolen from me.

For years.

“What’s in the safe?”

“Greg’s backups.”

“How do you know?”

“I put them there.”

My eyes opened.

“You had them?”

“He gave me copies because he thought Mom might kill him.”

The words chilled me.

“Why didn’t you go to the police?”

“Because they prove what I did too.”

I laughed bitterly.

“You protected yourself.”

“Yes.”

At least he finally admitted it.

“Where is Vanessa now?”

“I don’t know.”

“Judith?”

“I don’t know.”

“Nathan, listen carefully. Tell Detective Brooks everything.”

“If I do, I go to prison.”

“If you don’t, someone else might die.”

He was quiet.

Then Sophie, standing beside me, whispered:

“Daddy should tell the truth.”

Nathan heard her.

For a long moment, he said nothing.

Then his voice broke.

“You’re right, baby.”

The next morning, Nathan walked into the police station with an attorney.

And three hours later, police raided the catering company.

The safe was empty.

But the security footage showed exactly who had removed everything.

May you like

Vanessa.

Six hours earlier.
