Chapter 9 - The Waking Ghost
On Saturday morning—the day that was supposed to feature five hundred white doves, a custom Vera Wang gown, and a champagne fountain—I walked out of the recovery wing of Walter Reed Annex under my own power.
My side was heavily bandaged, and every step pulled against the surgical repair, but my spine was straight. My boots were polished. My dress uniform—the crisp, dark blue Army service uniform adorned with gold buttons, rank insignia, and the Silver Star pinned neatly above my heart—fit me like armor.
Colonel Vance walked beside me, his hands clasped behind his back.
"You don't have to do this, Captain," Vance said quietly as we reached the waiting black government SUV. "The legal teams have them completely boxed in. They are finished socially, professionally, and financially. You never have to lay eyes on them again."
I paused at the door of the SUV, looking out over the quiet military base. The air smelled of clean rain and jet fuel.
"They spent my entire life making me feel invisible, Colonel," I said, my voice steady, stripped of all the childhood hurt that had weighed me down for twenty-eight years. "They told that nurse I was faking my pain because my existence was an inconvenience to their show. I’m not going there to yell at them. I’m going there to collect what’s mine."
Vance studied me for a long moment, then nodded slowly. He stepped aside and opened the passenger door.
"Harris," Vance called out to the lead investigator. "Provide Captain Campbell with an active escort. Two vehicles. Full protocol."
"Yes, Sir."
As our small motorcade pulled out of the gates, heading back toward the suburban prison my parents had built for themselves, I looked at my reflection in the tinted glass.

The girl who had collapsed on the hardwood stairs, begging for an ambulance while her sister checked her lipstick, was dead. She had flatlined on that gurney.
The woman driving back was an officer of the United States Armed Forces. And she was coming to close the account.
