Chapter 8 - When Darnell Lost His Job

Darnell was forty-five when his company collapsed.
Not his fault.
Acquisition.
Layoffs.
He called.
“Dad.”
I knew that tone.
Fear.
For one second, I became the old Raymond.
Checkbook.
Rescue.
Fix.
Then I stopped.
“What do you need?”
“Honestly?”
“Yes.”
“Advice.”
Not money.
Progress.
We sat at my kitchen table.
He had six months of emergency savings.
Diane's trust had taught him.
Retirement.
No credit card debt.
Modest mortgage.
Vanessa still worked.
He was scared.
But not doomed.
“You're okay.”
“I don't feel okay.”
“Different thing.”
He laughed.
Within four months, he found another job.
Lower salary.
Better hours.
He took it.
Years earlier, he might have borrowed to preserve appearances.
Now he adjusted his life.
When the trust annual statement arrived, he barely mentioned it.
That was when I knew Diane's plan had worked.

Not because he became rich.
Because he stopped waiting to be rescued by dead people's money.
