Part 4: Escape Through the Mist

"What did you do to Olivia?!" I screamed, clutching the journal tightly to my chest.
"Your wife was a brilliant researcher, but she was entirely too stubborn," the masked man said, taking a slow step forward. "Those two girls upstairs are the only surviving assets of her project. We need them back. And now, you’re coming with us."
He raised the rifle, aiming straight for my chest. But before his finger could squeeze the trigger, a loud crash echoed from the stairs. Two small shadows descended into the candlelight. Emma and Ella had followed me.
Suddenly, both girls let out a piercing, high-frequency scream. The sheer acoustic force shattered my flashlight lens into dust. The masked man dropped his rifle, shrieking in agony as blood began to seep from his ears. These were no ordinary children—they were anomalies, gifted or engineered, and Olivia had died protecting them.
"Ethan, run!" Emma yelled, grabbing my hand.
I snatched the journal, and together we sprinted up the stairs, leaving the groaning man behind. Above ground, sirens began to wail through the mountain air. Bright tactical flashlights began cutting through the foggy woods from the distance. They were closing in.
We ran blindly back to the cottage. My SUV was still idling in the driveway, its headlights cutting through the mist. I threw open the back door, shoving Emma and Ella inside, before diving into the driver's seat. I slammed the shifter into reverse and floored the gas. The tires screeched against the gravel, leaving the cottage and the approaching black-clad operatives in our dust.
As the SUV roared onto the dark, winding North Carolina highway, I glanced at the rearview mirror. Emma and Ella were exhausted, quietly sharing the stale piece of bread, but their eyes held a profound sense of relief. They trusted me.

I looked down at Olivia's journal resting on the passenger seat. I hadn't found her yet, and I knew I had just declared war on a massive, invisible enemy. But looking at the girls in the back, I knew the man who spent three years drowning in sorrow was dead.
I was done running. I was going to find the truth, protect these girls, and bring Olivia home. The hunt had officially begun.
