Chapter 5 - The Pentagon Call

The secure underground facility of Special Operations Command at Fort Meade didn’t care that it was Thanksgiving morning. Fluorescent lights cast a sharp, sterile glow over banks of monitors, where analysts tracked global satellite sweeps and low-frequency telemetry.

I walked down the central corridor, Captain Miller flanking my right, my boots echoing off the polished composite floor. The heavy winter overcoat draped over my pregnancy drew respectful nods from passing junior officers, but I kept my eyes forward, fixed on the double steel doors of Briefing Room 4.

Inside, three high-ranking officials stood around a holographic conference table. At the center was Lieutenant General James Vance-Cross—the Deputy Director of Defense Intelligence, and, by bitter irony of lineage, Julian’s estranged uncle who had cut ties with his nephew’s side of the family over a decade ago.

“Major Mitchell,” General Vance-Cross said, his weathered face breaking into a somber, respectful nod. “Take a seat. You’ve had an intolerable morning.”

“I’m fine, General,” I replied, sitting down as Captain Miller handed me a glass of warm water. “I want to know why my emergency recall was expedited six hours ahead of schedule.”

The General tapped the console. The holographic display flickered to life, showing an aerial satellite grid of the rugged Hindu Kush border region.

“Seven months ago, Operation Shadow Harvest went dark,” the General began, his tone low and resonant. “David’s reconnaissance unit was ambushed. Communication ceased. The Department classified the mission as a casualty event due to the operational cover required to extract embedded assets.”

My chest tightened, breath catching in my throat. “You held a memorial service. We buried an empty casket with full honors.”

“Because if the hostile networks knew David was alive, they would have combed every mountain valley until they found him,” General Vance-Cross said, looking directly into my eyes. “Sixteen hours ago, a high-frequency encoded pulse was picked up by our listening posts in Turkey. It carried David’s personal cryptographic signature.”

I gripped the edge of the conference table, my knuckles turning white. The baby kicked violently against my ribs, as if echoing the thunderous beat of my own heart.

“David is alive?” I whispered.

“He secured the intelligence cache and survived behind enemy lines for over two hundred days,” the General confirmed. “A black-ops recovery team is already inbound to his coordinates. But your house in Virginia wasn’t just a target for Julian’s petty greed, Sarah. David hid a redundant copy of the mission’s master encryption key in the basement server before he deployed.”

A cold realization washed over me. Julian had connected an unencrypted commercial laptop directly into a terminal holding the deepest military secrets in the hemisphere.

“He didn’t just commit fraud,” I said, my voice turning to steel. “He compromised an active extraction corridor.”

“Precisely,” General Vance-Cross replied darkly. “And he’s about to realize what happens when you sell out a United States operative.”
