Chapter 17 - The House Elena Wanted

Salvatore never returned to the old mansion permanently.

Too many ghosts.

Instead, he purchased a house outside the city.

Not small.

Leo accused him of being incapable of understanding small.

But it had trees.

A kitchen people actually used.

A school ten minutes away.

And no underground interrogation rooms.

“Progress,” Nora said.

Salvatore transformed the Moretti Foundation.

Every organization connected to the Crown was closed.

Millions were redirected toward abused children, foster programs and shelters.

Leo insisted Miller Street be rebuilt.

“Not the same people.”

“Obviously.”

“And no locked storage rooms.”

Salvatore’s expression hardened.

“Never.”

Tommy moved into a foster family nearby.

He and Leo became inseparable.

One afternoon, Leo came home with a girl from school named Sophie.

Salvatore interrogated her father during pickup.

Leo was horrified.

“You asked what he does for a living!”

“I was making conversation.”

“You asked if he has a criminal record.”

“Relevant.”

“You’re impossible.”

Carmine laughed for ten straight minutes.

Life became ordinary in pieces.

Homework.

Burned pancakes.

Parent conferences.

Titan stealing meat from counters.

Salvatore discovered that ordinary could be harder than war.

And much better.

Then Nora brought a final sealed envelope.

“Elena asked me to give you this only after the Crown was gone.”

Salvatore opened it alone.

Salvatore,

If you are reading this, then somehow you survived all of us.

I spent years angry with you for things you did and even more years angry with you for things I feared you might do.

That was not fair.

I should have trusted you with the truth.

But you should have become a man worth trusting sooner.

Salvatore laughed painfully.

That sounded exactly like Elena.

The letter continued.

If Leo found you, then please do one thing for me.

Do not make him inherit your fear.

Give him choices.

Give him kindness.

Give him the ordinary life neither of us knew how to build.

And if he chooses to love you, understand that it is a gift, not a debt.

Salvatore folded the letter.

Leo stood in the doorway.

“From Mama?”

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

Salvatore held out his hand.

Leo came closer.

“She said you don’t owe me anything.”

Leo frowned.

“That’s weird.”

“Why?”

“Because you’re my dad.”

May you like

He said it as if that settled everything.

Maybe it did.
