Chapter 10 - The Man Without a Reputation

Life after Leo’s release was awkward.

People remembered him.

Some feared him.

Some hated him.

Some wanted favors.

He gave none.

He worked.

That was almost scandalous.

One legitimate Caruso property company remained after restructuring.

Leo sold most of his ownership to employees.

He kept a small consulting role.

For the first time since he was twenty, he had a boss.

A sixty-year-old accountant named Susan who terrified him.

Clara adored her.

“Your expense report is late,” Susan told him once.

Leo stared.

“I used to control the waterfront.”

Susan pushed the paperwork toward him.

“And now you control whether column F matches your receipts.”

Clara laughed for ten minutes when he told her.

Their relationship grew slowly.

Clara refused to move into his old house.

Leo sold it anyway.

“Too many ghosts.”

He rented an apartment.

Normal building.

Normal neighbors.

One complained his television was loud.

Leo apologized.

Frank called it humiliating.

Leo called it freedom.

Then one night, Clara woke to Leo sitting beside the window.

Nightmare.

She knew without asking.

“Maria?”

He nodded.

She sat beside him.

“I keep thinking if I’d been different—”

“No.”

He looked at her.

“You don’t get to steal my line.”

“What line?”

“Your father made choices. So did you.”

Leo looked down.

“I made terrible ones.”

“Yes.”

“You really know how to comfort people.”

“I’m gifted.”

He smiled.

Then Clara took his hand.

“You can’t change what twenty-four-year-old Leo did.”

“No.”

“But forty-something Leo can decide what happens tomorrow.”

He leaned his head against hers.

“That sounds exhausting.”

“It is.”

They sat quietly.

No guns.

No enemies.

No debts.

Just two people learning that peace was not the absence of consequences.

It was what came after you stopped running from them.
