Chapter 6 - DANIEL'S DEBT

“I didn't steal it.”

Daniel said it immediately.

Claire said nothing.

“I swear.”

Emily replayed the recording.

William's voice remained clear.

She stole it for Daniel.

Daniel paced.

“My father thought Mom was covering my losses.”

“What losses?” Claire asked.

Daniel stopped.

Another secret.

“Investments.”

“How much?”

He looked away.

“How much?”

“About nine hundred thousand.”

Claire's breath caught.

“When?”

“Four years ago.”

“Before your father died.”

“Yes.”

“Did Margaret know?”

“Yes.”

“Did William?”

“Eventually.”

Claire stared at him.

Daniel explained.

He had invested heavily in a restaurant-development project.

It collapsed.

He borrowed privately to cover losses.

The lender threatened lawsuits.

Margaret stepped in.

She said she had “family reserves.”

Daniel accepted.

“I thought it was her money.”

“You never asked?”

“I was desperate.”

Claire laughed bitterly.

“Another Bennett family tradition.”

Daniel accepted the insult.

“What did Dad think?”

“He thought Mom was stealing company money to cover you.”

“Was she?”

“I don't know.”

Harold's records suggested exactly that.

But the numbers did not align.

Daniel owed approximately $900,000.

More than $1.4 million disappeared.

Where did the rest go?

Investigators traced Victor Sloan.

His consulting entities had received hundreds of thousands.

But most funds quickly moved elsewhere.

To a company called MB Strategic Holdings.

Margaret Bennett.

Claire stared at the name.

Margaret had been building a secret personal fund.

The trust theft fit the same pattern.

Money routed through legitimate-looking expenses.

Approvals using other people's credentials.

Margaret's attorney insisted all transactions had valid explanations.

Then the probate court suspended her as Leo's trustee.

An independent fiduciary took control.

Margaret exploded.

She called Daniel.

Claire heard the voicemail.

“You let that woman steal our family.”

Daniel deleted it.

Claire watched him.

“You should save that.”

“Why?”

“Evidence.”

He recovered it.

For the first time, Daniel was helping rather than hiding.

But Claire did not mistake cooperation for forgiveness.

Their marriage remained fractured.

Then Leo asked a question.

“Is Daddy leaving?”

Claire crouched beside him.

“Daddy and Mommy are figuring things out.”

“Because Grandma hit me?”

Claire's heart broke.

“No.”

Leo's eyes filled.

“Then because I told?”

Claire pulled him close.

“Never.”

She waited until he looked at her.

“Listen to me. Telling the truth did not cause this.”

“Promise?”

“Promise.”

That night Daniel slept in the guest room.

The next morning, police executed a warrant at Margaret's house.

They seized financial records.

Computers.

Phones.

Medication logs from William's final months.

One object immediately caught attention.

A locked metal box.

Inside were old prescription bottles.

William Bennett.

Heart medication.

Several pills did not match the prescription label.

Laboratory testing began.

Margaret claimed she kept the bottles for sentimental reasons.

Nobody found that believable.

Then Victor Sloan was located.

Not in Florida.

At a private rehabilitation facility in Arizona.

He had been there for months.

Investigators interviewed him.

Victor admitted receiving money from Margaret.

But not willingly.

“She used my companies.”

“For what?”

“To move money.”

“Did you know?”

“Eventually.”

“Why stay quiet?”

“She threatened me.”

“With what?”

Victor looked ashamed.

“Evidence that I had embezzled years earlier.”

“Did you?”

“Yes.”

Victor had been trapped by his own wrongdoing.

Margaret exploited it.

Then investigators asked about William.

Victor's answer changed the case.

“Margaret called me the night before he died.”

“What did she say?”

“She said William was going to destroy Daniel.”

Claire's stomach tightened.

“Then what?”

“She said, ‘By tomorrow, he won't be a problem.’”

The following morning William collapsed.

But Victor added one more thing.

“I don't think Margaret killed him.”

“Why?”

“Because she called me afterward.”

“What did she say?”

Victor swallowed.

“She said someone beat her to it.”

Claire stared at the interview transcript.

Someone else may have tampered with William's medication.

May you like

And according to access logs, one other person had entered William's bedroom that night.

Daniel Bennett.
