Chapter 8 - Lauren’s Secret Contract

The basement holding area of the Dallas County Lew Sterrett Justice Center smelled of stale Pine-Sol, cold iron, and unwashed fear.

Grant sat on a steel bench bolted to the concrete floor, his hands cuffed in front of him. His thrift-store sweater had been stripped away during intake and replaced with an oversized orange twill shirt that scratched at his neck. His fingerprints were logged, his mugshot was already circulating on the national feeds, and the emergency bail commissioner had set a cash-only bond at three million dollars—an impossible sum when every dollar bearing his name had been placed under judicial freeze.

Across from him, behind a heavy partition of reinforced wire mesh, sat Daniel Reed. The attorney had not touched the Styrofoam cup of lukewarm coffee placed on the small plastic table.

"Where is she?" Grant rasped, his voice raw from hours of yelling through the bars of the intake tank. "Tell Natalie to get down here. She’s made her point! I’ve spent the night in a cell with gang members and car thieves! She got her revenge, Daniel! What else does she want?"

Daniel didn't open his briefcase. He merely folded his hands over the edge of the table and leaned in slightly, his eyes holding the steady, emotionless weight of a funeral director.

"Natalie isn't coming here, Grant," Daniel said evenly. "She spent the morning chairing the executive transition committee for Holloway Development. Or rather, what used to be called Holloway Development. As of eight o'clock, the Texas Secretary of State accepted the certificate of amendment. The corporate name has been reverted to Whitmore Commercial Holdings."

Grant lunged forward against the mesh, the iron links rattling sharply under his weight. "That’s my name! She can't wipe my name off the state registry!"

"She can when she controls eighty-eight percent of the outstanding preferred equity," Daniel replied. "And you have far more pressing concerns than branding, Grant. Take a look at this."

Daniel slid a laminated legal brief beneath the narrow gap at the base of the partition.

Grant pulled it toward him with trembling, cuffed hands. At the top of the first page was an embossed logo: The Price Agency LLC. Beneath it was a standard legal instrument: Confidential Services & Retainer Agreement, dated five months earlier.

Grant’s eyes scanned the fine print, the blood rushing into his ears with the force of a freight train.

Party A: Whitmore Asset Management (Client)

Party B: Lauren Elizabeth Price (Independent Contractor)

Scope of Engagement: Intelligence Gathering & Fiduciary Stress Testing

Grant stopped breathing. The room seemed to tilt sideways, his vision narrowing until only the black-and-white letters remained.

"What is this?" Grant whispered. His throat seized up, producing only a wet, strangled squeak. "What the hell is this, Daniel?"

"Lauren Price was never a receptionist at your firm by chance, Grant," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a rhythmic, measured cadence. "Six months ago, Natalie noticed subtle irregularities in the offshore accounts tied to the Midland logistics project. She knew someone was skimming, but she wanted to know how far you were willing to go. How easily you could be manipulated into committing an overt, unpardonable breach of fiduciary trust."

"No..." Grant shook his head violently, denying the words before they could finish cutting into him. "No! Lauren loved me! She lived with me in Turtle Creek! She picked out our furniture! She told me every day that I was the smartest man she had ever met!"

"Ms. Price is an operative specializing in corporate forensic investigations," Daniel explained, utterly indifferent to Grant's agony. "Her retainer was one hundred and fifty thousand dollars, with a performance bonus contingent on securing concrete evidence of grand larceny and unauthorized debt pledges. Every dinner at the Mansion, every weekend trip to South Beach, every private promise you made to transfer corporate equity into her name—every single conversation was recorded on a miniature audio device installed in the lining of that satin purse she carried everywhere."

Grant remembered the satin purse. Lauren had clutched it against her chest in the Bentley. She had held it tightly in the emergency room at Parkland while refusing to let the doctors touch her.

"The fake ultrasound?" Grant croaked, tears of total humiliation finally spilling down his cheeks. "The baby?"

"Natalie knew about your medical diagnosis from Baylor, Grant. We all did," Daniel said softly. "The staged pregnancy was Ms. Price’s masterstroke. She knew your vanity. She knew your absolute obsession with leaving an heir to an empire you didn't even own. She knew that the moment you believed she was carrying your child, you would act recklessly. You would accelerate the acquisition, pull money from the escrow reserves without authorization, and bring her to that gala to humiliate your wife in public."

Daniel leaned back in his plastic chair, watching the ruined man across the table slowly absorb the magnitude of his defeat.

"And you walked directly into the center of the net, Grant. Exactly where we wanted you."

"The ring..." Grant whispered, his knuckles digging into the steel table. "The eighteen-thousand-dollar diamond ring..."

"Surrendered to the Dallas County District Attorney’s evidence locker at midnight," Daniel replied. "Accompanied by an affidavit signed by Ms. Price detailing how you pressured her to accept corporate property purchased with embezzled operational funds. She will not be prosecuted. In fact, she has been granted full transactional immunity as a cooperating state witness."

Grant let out a high, ragged wail that echoed down the concrete corridor, slamming his cuffed hands against the table until the metal links bit deeply into the skin of his wrists.

"She set me up! They set me up!" he shrieked at the ceiling guards. "It was entrapment! It was a conspiracy!"

"Entrapment requires state action, Grant," Daniel noted clinically, standing up and smoothing his tailored wool coat. "Natalie is a private citizen. You chose to steal. You chose to cheat. You chose to betray the woman who gave you everything. The only thing Natalie did was hold up the mirror so everyone could see what kind of man you actually are."

Daniel picked up his leather briefcase and knocked once on the heavy steel door behind him. The intake guard unlocked the heavy iron bolt with a sharp clank.

"Wait!" Grant scrambled up from the bench, pressing his face against the cold wire mesh. "Daniel, wait! What about the board meeting this morning? The emergency session at Holloway Tower! I have voting rights! I have founder shares!"

Daniel paused in the doorway, looking back over his shoulder with an expression of mild, detached pity.

"You had forty-nine percent of the non-voting common stock, Grant," Daniel said. "Under Section 12 of the corporate bylaws—which you signed without reading during your honeymoon in Maui—a formal felony indictment automatically revokes your seat on the executive board. The meeting began five minutes ago."

Daniel checked his gold pocket watch.

"And by now, your office has already been cleared."
