CHAPTER 7 Across the State Line

Vanessa crossed into Pennsylvania at 7:12 p.m.
A traffic camera captured the white utility van traveling south on Interstate 81. Thomas Vale was driving. Vanessa sat in the passenger seat.
Lily was somewhere in the back.
Once they crossed the state line, federal authorities joined the investigation.
The kidnapping was no longer a private family crisis.
It became a federal crime.
Ethan sat inside the command center with Daniel, Miriam and Jonathan Mercer, who had flown in after hearing the news.
Maps covered the walls.
Agents tracked toll records, phone signals and fuel purchases.
Jonathan pointed toward the route.
“She’s not going south.”
An agent looked at him.
“The vehicle is traveling south.”
“She wants you to think that. Vanessa always creates a visible trail before switching directions.”
“How do you know?”
“Because she did it when she sent my son away.”
Jonathan explained that the residential facility in Maine had been listed under a false corporate name. Vanessa deliberately booked a flight to Chicago the same morning Caleb disappeared, making it appear that she was traveling west.
Instead, she left the airport through a service exit and drove north.
“She needs control,” Jonathan said. “She will choose a place connected to the plan. Somewhere prepared in advance.”
Priya called from Cole Development.
She had traced encrypted messages between Thomas Vale and Blackthorne executive Malcolm Blackthorne.
One message referenced a property called Winterglass.
Miriam searched corporate records.
“Winterglass Lodge,” she announced. “An abandoned ski resort owned by a Blackthorne subsidiary.”
The lodge was not south.
It was northeast, across the New York border.
Vanessa had sent the van toward Pennsylvania as a decoy.
Agents reviewed cameras near an interchange thirty miles from the state line.
At 7:34 p.m., Thomas and Vanessa abandoned the van behind a warehouse.
A black pickup truck collected them.
The pickup traveled north.
The tactical team changed direction.
Winterglass Lodge sat on the edge of a mountain, surrounded by dense forest and old service roads. A winter storm was expected before midnight.
“Vanessa knows the weather will slow police,” Jonathan said.
Ethan stared at the map.
Lily hated thunderstorms and strong wind. Since her mother’s death, sudden noises made her panic.
He imagined her trapped in a strange place while snow gathered outside.
“I need to speak to her,” he said.
Agent Warren shook his head.
“Vanessa will contact you when she wants leverage.”
“She wants the sale agreement.”
“We can prepare a controlled response.”
Ethan looked at Miriam.
“Get me the agreement.”
Daniel frowned.
“You’re not actually signing.”
“I’m giving her what she expects.”
Miriam understood.
They created a document that resembled the Blackthorne acquisition contract but contained no enforceable transfer. Hidden metadata marked every electronic copy.
Ethan also recorded the confession Vanessa demanded.
He looked directly into the camera.
“My daughter, Lily Cole, has struggled emotionally since the death of her mother. On the day of my wedding, she locked herself on a balcony to stop the ceremony. Vanessa Hart did not harm her. My family and I created a false accusation after I decided I was not ready to marry.”
Every word felt poisonous.
When the recording ended, Ethan looked away.
“She can never see that.”
“She won’t,” Miriam promised.
At 9:03 p.m., Vanessa called.
“You took too long.”
“I have the agreement.”
“And the video?”
“Yes.”
“Send the video first.”
“No. I see Lily first.”
Vanessa’s face appeared on-screen. Her hair was wet from melting snow.
“You’re in no position to negotiate.”
“I’m the only person who can give you the company. If Lily is hurt, you get nothing.”
For several seconds, Vanessa said nothing.
Then she turned the camera.
Lily sat on a mattress in a small office. A wool blanket covered her shoulders.
She looked tired but uninjured.
“Daddy, I’m sorry,” she said.
“You did nothing wrong.”
Vanessa grabbed the phone back.
“Upload the confession.”
Ethan sent the prepared file.
Agents monitored the transfer.
Vanessa smiled when it arrived.
“Now the contract.”
“You bring Lily to me.”
“You sign first.”
“I signed.”
“Then upload it.”
Ethan sent the false agreement.
Priya tracked the receiving device.
“Signal confirmed,” she whispered. “Winterglass Lodge.”
The tactical team moved in.
Vanessa continued speaking, unaware.
“You made the correct choice, Ethan.”
“Let Lily go.”
“Soon.”
“You have what you wanted.”
Vanessa’s smile faded.
“I wanted a husband who understood ambition. Instead, I got a sentimental father who still keeps photographs of a dead woman in his house.”
Ethan’s anger rose, but he controlled it.
“You were never jealous of Rachel.”
“No. I was disgusted by the way you worshipped weakness.”
“She was stronger than you will ever be.”
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
Behind her, a door opened.
Thomas entered.
“We have to move,” he said.
Vanessa covered the camera, but not before agents identified the room.
A second-floor administrative office on the east side of the lodge.
The tactical team approached through the forest.
Then Thomas noticed something.
“The file metadata is wrong.”
Vanessa looked at him.
“What?”
“This isn’t their standard contract.”
Her eyes returned to the screen.
“You lied to me.”
“You kidnapped my daughter.”
Vanessa grabbed Lily by the arm.
The girl screamed.
Ethan stood.
“Don’t touch her!”
The video shook violently.
Thomas shouted that police were outside.
A loud crash echoed from somewhere in the building.
Vanessa dragged Lily toward a rear door.
Snow blew into the room.
“Run!” Thomas yelled.
Gunfire erupted—not directed at Lily, but somewhere below as Thomas fired through a window.
Federal agents returned controlled fire.
The call remained connected.
Ethan could hear Lily crying.
Vanessa pulled her onto an exterior walkway covered in ice.
“Stop!” an agent shouted.
Vanessa held Lily in front of her.
“Come closer and she goes over the railing!”
The camera dropped onto the snow but continued transmitting.
Ethan could see only boots.
Vanessa’s expensive heels.
Lily’s small shoes.
Agents surrounded the walkway but could not fire safely.
“Daddy!” Lily screamed.
Then another voice came through the call.
Calm.
Female.
It was Agent Renee Alvarez.
“Lily, do you remember what your father told you?”
The child sobbed.
“You never have to be quiet when you’re scared.”
“That’s right,” Alvarez said. “And you never have to protect an adult who hurts you.”
Vanessa tightened her grip.
“Stop talking to her.”
Alvarez continued.
“Lily, when I count to three, make yourself very small.”
Vanessa began backing toward the railing.
“Do not move!”
“One,” Alvarez said.
Vanessa pulled Lily closer.
“Two.”
Lily suddenly dropped her entire weight.
Vanessa lost her balance.
“Three!”
An agent lunged forward and seized Lily’s arm.
Alvarez tackled Vanessa against the walkway.
For one horrifying moment, Vanessa’s body tipped over the edge.
She caught the railing with both hands.
Lily was pulled to safety.
Vanessa hung above the frozen slope, screaming for help.
Alvarez looked down at her.
The same woman who had locked a child outside in the cold was now begging not to be left there.
“Please!” Vanessa cried. “Pull me up!”
Alvarez secured a rope around the railing.
“We don’t treat human lives the way you do.”
Agents pulled Vanessa onto the walkway and placed her in handcuffs.
At the command center, Ethan heard Lily’s voice through the phone.
“Daddy?”
“I’m here.”
“They got me.”
Ethan covered his face with one hand.
May you like
“I’m coming, sweetheart.”
For the first time since the nightmare began, he allowed himself to cry.
