Chapter 10 - Gideon’s Last Lesson

Daniel wanted to trade himself for Evelyn.
Agent Cole rejected the idea immediately.
“He wants you emotionally compromised.”
“He has my mother.”
“He also wants you to behave predictably.”
Daniel paced the secure room.
“What would you suggest?”
“That we find him.”
The video contained almost no identifying detail.
Concrete wall.
Wooden chair.
Single hanging light.
No window.
But audio technicians isolated a faint sound.
A train horn.
Then a second sound.
Church bells.
Thomas listened repeatedly.
“I know those bells.”
Everyone turned.
“Where?”
“St. Catherine’s.”
An abandoned Catholic school near the old rail yard.
Covenant had rented meeting rooms there briefly in the early 2000s.
Federal teams moved toward the property.
Daniel was forced to stay behind.
Claire remained beside him.
“You can’t control what happens next.”
Daniel looked at her.
“I’m tired of people telling me that.”
“I know.”
“My entire childhood was controlled by people who decided what I could know.”
Claire touched his face.
“Then don’t let Gideon control you now by making you run into a trap.”
Daniel breathed slowly.
She was right.
He hated that she was right.
Agents entered St. Catherine’s at 2:41 a.m.
Empty.
But still warm.
Evelyn’s chair remained in the basement.
One cut rope lay on the floor.
A portable light.
A camera.
No blood.
Cole called Daniel.
“We think she was moved less than thirty minutes ago.”
Then they found a handwritten note.
The boy remembers the lake.
Daniel read the photograph Cole sent.
“The lake?”
Thomas looked sick.
“Lake Arden.”
Gideon’s old retreat.
But they had already searched it.
Daniel suddenly remembered something.
Not from adulthood.
From childhood.
A dock.
A boathouse.
His mother telling him never to open a gray door.
“Boathouse.”
Thomas stared.
“What?”
“At Lake Arden.”
Federal agents returned to the property.
Behind the abandoned boathouse they discovered a concealed stairway leading beneath the shoreline.
An old storm shelter.
Gideon had prepared multiple hiding places over decades.
Evelyn was inside.
Alive.
But Gideon was gone again.
Paramedics brought her out wrapped in a blanket.
Daniel met her at the hospital.
She had bruises around her wrists.
A cut above one eye.
When Daniel entered, she started crying.
Not elegantly.
Not quietly.
The kind of crying he had never seen from her.
“I thought he was going to kill me.”
Daniel sat down.
For a moment, every terrible thing she had done stood between them.
Then he held her hand.
Not forgiveness.
Not yet.
But humanity.
“What did he want?”
“For me to retract everything.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
Daniel looked surprised.
Evelyn gave a broken laugh.
“I finally learned something.”
“What?”
“That obedience never makes a cruel man merciful.”
The sentence hung in the room.
She told investigators Gideon kept talking about Daniel.
About legacy.
About the failure of modern families.
He believed Daniel belonged to Covenant because he had been raised under its system.
“He said you were proof it worked.”
Daniel almost laughed.
“I spent thirty years in therapy-adjacent denial because of him.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“I know.”
Before Gideon left, he told Evelyn he would finish what started in 1998.
Rebecca’s evidence had exposed them once.
Claire’s evidence had exposed them again.
“Women with recordings,” he said, “always think truth will save them.”
Claire heard this later and said quietly, “He’s terrified of witnesses.”
That observation changed the investigation.
Gideon did not simply destroy evidence.
He collected it.
Controlled it.
Edited it.
He needed ownership of the narrative.
Agent Cole began looking for places where Gideon could still broadcast or archive material.
One location stood out.
Heritage Foundation maintained a private media facility in downtown Philadelphia used for seminars and livestream events.
It had supposedly been abandoned after the raids.
But electrical records showed power consumption overnight.
Agents surrounded the building.
Inside they found servers running.
Uploads scheduled.
Hundreds of edited videos prepared for release.
Smear campaigns targeting witnesses.
Judges.
Former members.
Claire.
Thomas.
Daniel.
Even Agent Cole.
Gideon planned to poison public opinion before trial.
But he was not there.
Then a technician found a scheduled livestream.
Start time: 8:00 p.m.
The title:
THE TRUTH ABOUT THE THORNE FAMILY.
Daniel understood.
“He’s going public.”
At eight, the stream began.
Millions were already watching because media outlets had discovered the link.
Gideon appeared seated in a dark room.
He looked directly at the camera.
“For months, America has heard a carefully constructed story.”
Daniel watched from a federal command center.
Gideon accused Claire of manipulating Daniel.
Thomas of fabricating abuse.
Federal investigators of persecuting religious families.
Then he played edited clips.
Daniel felt anger rising.
But Claire remained calm.
“He’ll overreach.”
Daniel looked at her.
“What?”
“People like him always do when they think they still control the room.”
She was right.
Gideon began discussing Rebecca.
He insisted she fell accidentally.
He accused Thomas of exploiting her death.
Then Gideon made a mistake.
He said:
“I stood several feet away when Rebecca stepped backward.”
Agent Cole turned sharply.
“That detail was never public.”
Thomas stared at the screen.
Neither was Gideon’s exact position.
Only someone present would know.
Gideon continued.
“She was warned about the loose edge.”
Again, another unreleased detail.
The old man was trying so hard to prove innocence that he was placing himself at the scene.
Investigators traced the livestream.
Signals bounced through multiple servers.
But one originated from a private estate outside Harrisburg.
Teams deployed.
Gideon kept talking.
Then Claire leaned toward the screen.
“Look behind him.”
Daniel saw a dark wooden cabinet.
A brass clock.
And part of a stained-glass window.
Thomas recognized it.
“That’s the Vale house.”
Gideon’s childhood estate.
Public records showed it had been sold twenty years earlier.
To another shell company.
Federal vehicles reached the property while the livestream continued.
Daniel watched tactical officers enter.
Gideon suddenly paused.
He heard something.
His face changed.
For the first time, fear.
He stood.
The video shook.
Then stopped.
Minutes later Agent Cole received the call.
Gideon Vale had been arrested.
No gunfire.
No dramatic escape.
Just an old man discovered in a basement filled with cameras and carefully labeled boxes.
Thirty years of control ended with handcuffs.
Daniel should have felt relief.
Instead he felt hollow.
Because Gideon’s arrest did not erase what happened.
Trials remained.
Families remained broken.
His relationship with his mother remained almost impossible to understand.
And then investigators opened one final box from Gideon’s basement.
Inside was a birth certificate.
Daniel’s.
Attached to it was a handwritten note.
Thomas Thorne is not the biological father.
May you like
Daniel stared at the page.
Just when he thought Gideon had run out of ways to damage his family, the deadliest secret of all appeared.
