Chapter 11 - The Black Box Evidence

Avery didn't offer a passionate speech. She didn't raise her voice, and she didn't show emotion. Instead, she reached into her dress jacket pocket and pulled out a small, ruggedized micro-SD card encased in clear plastic.

“Permission to introduce evidence to the record, sir,” she stated.

General Vance frowned, waving a dismissive hand. “What is that, Mitchell? We have official radio logs—”

“This is an encrypted, continuous audio-visual data log recorded on a military-grade micro-body camera,” Avery said, looking directly at the General. “Issued under Joint Special Operations Command protocol for high-risk maritime evaluations, synchronized to the atomic clock at Naval Station Norfolk.”

Briggs’s face went completely gray. His hands began to shake beneath his sleeves.

“Body camera?” Briggs stuttered, his voice cracking. “She wasn't authorized... candidate gear manifests don't allow—”

“Commander Hayes personally authorized the unit under Directive 44-Bravo,” Avery interrupted, turning her head toward Hayes, who stood impassively near the doorway with a manila folder in his hands. “To document any anomalies during the four-day proving phase.”

Hayes stepped forward and plugged the drive into the secure conference room terminal.

The massive seventy-five-inch digital display mounted on the wall hummed to life.

First came the video from the barracks: crisp, high-definition audio capturing Briggs, Trent, and SFC Vance in the locker room discussing the plot to plant the stolen optics and alter Avery’s GPS to drop her into the abandoned quarry sinkholes.

“A thief in the barracks, and a casualty in the swamp,” Briggs’s recorded voice rang out with crystal clarity through the high-end conference room speakers. “Let’s see her tap her way out of a court-martial.”

The JAG officers gasped. Colonel Martinez slammed his pen down onto the table. General Vance leaned back in his chair as if he had been slapped across the mouth.

Then came the swamp footage.

The camera, mounted flush to Avery’s load-bearing vest, displayed the torrential rain and the sudden crack of live fire. It clearly showed Briggs shrieking in terror, dropping his weapon in the mud, and curling into a fetal ball while weeping: “Don't shoot! Don't shoot! I’m an instructor!”

It showed Avery dragging him behind cover. It showed her calmly stepping into the line of fire, neutralizing two armed contractors, and ordering Briggs to get on the radio—an order he completely failed to execute while cowering in the dirt.

The footage ended with a crisp freeze-frame of Briggs sobbing under his thermal blanket while Avery cleared the enemy weapons.

Total, suffocating silence gripped the room.

No one spoke. No one breathed.

Avery stood at attention, her eyes fixed directly on the two-star general. “Physics doesn't care about feelings, sir. And digital logs don't care about rank. That is my sworn statement.”
