Chapter 8 - The Courtroom Execution

Six months later, the golden spring sunshine of late May poured through the soaring arched lancet windows of Courtroom 502 at the Richard J. Daley Center in downtown Chicago.

The courtroom was packed to absolute capacity.

Over one hundred and twenty corporate logistics directors, forensic auditors, high-society observers, and national legal journalists filled the polished oak benches beneath the Great Seal of the State of Illinois.

Sitting at the primary defense table, bound in heavy steel waist chains, handcuffs, and leg shackles, was thirty-two-year-old Rowan Mercer.

His athletic, country-club vanity was completely, irrevocably pulverized into dust.

He wore an oversized, coarse brown county institutional inmate jumpsuit; his styled hair had been shorn to an unwashed institutional buzz cut; his manicured hands were rough and calloused from six months in federal detention; and his face was gaunt, sallow, and stripped of every drop of his manufactured charm.

Beside him sat sixty-year-old Selina Mercer, bound in matching steel chains, weeping silently into a paper towel, her blush-pink designer suits replaced by faded orange county detention scrubs.

Presiding over the bench was Chancery Judge Katherine Harris—a legendary, no-nonsense jurist known throughout the Seventh Circuit for handing down ruthless sentences to white-collar predators who weaponize domestic trust.

Judge Harris adjusted her reading glasses, looking down from the elevated mahogany bench with cold, diamond-tipped severity.

"The matter of Phoebe Eleanor Sterling versus Rowan Alexander Mercer," Judge Harris announced, her wooden gavel slamming down with a concussive CRACK.

"The court will now render its final summary judgment on the dissolution of marital assets, permanent child custody, and criminal referrals."

Arthur Sterling, Esq., stood tall at the petitioner’s podium, his voice slicing through the silent courtroom like an iron blade:

"Your Honor, the respondent’s legal counsel has submitted a formal letter of complete, unreserved stipulation to all counts of the petition. Mr. Mercer has voluntarily waived all rights to contest the forensic findings."

Judge Harris looked down at Rowan:

"Mr. Mercer, do you acknowledge under oath that your intentional absence during the birth of your child, coupled with your systemic diversion of marital and corporate capital, constituted gross domestic abandonment and criminal fraud?"

Rowan slowly stood to his feet, his steel chains rattling loudly against the defense table.

He looked across the courtroom aisle toward where I sat.

I was breathtaking.

I wore an exquisite, custom-tailored navy-blue silk power suit by Dior, my dark hair falling over my shoulders in soft, radiant waves. My posture was straight as forged titanium; my hazel eyes were calm, serene, and burning with an unshakeable inner peace.

Sitting proudly at my side was my father, Gideon Sterling, holding six-month-old Leo, who wore a soft white linen sailor suit, gurgling happily in the morning light.

Rowan’s throat bobbed. His bloodshot eyes welled with bitter, agonizing tears of pure ruin:

"I acknowledge it, Your Honor," Rowan answered, his voice reduced to a dry, broken whisper.

"Every word in my wife’s petition is the truth."

Judge Harris nodded once, picking up her heavy wooden gavel:

"Under the powers vested in this court," Judge Harris declared, her voice echoing across the silent hall like an ancient funeral bell:

"The marriage between Phoebe Eleanor Sterling and Rowan Alexander Mercer is hereby DISSOLVED WITH PREJUDICE."

Judge Harris turned to the asset distribution decree:

"Under the Illinois Marital Property Act and the Emergency Forensic Restitution Covenants, Rowan Mercer is stripped of all legal, equitable, and marital claims to any assets held by Phoebe Sterling or The Sterling Global Trust."

Judge Harris turned to custody:

"Full Sole Legal and Physical Custody of the minor child, Leo Sterling, is awarded exclusively and permanently to Phoebe Sterling. Rowan Mercer is stripped of all parental rights, with a permanent, lifetime order of protection prohibiting any contact, direct or indirect, through third parties."

CRACK.

The gavel fell like an executioner’s axe.

Judge Harris then turned her gaze onto the criminal docket:

"Regarding the criminal charges of Grand Corporate Embezzlement Exceeding Four Hundred Thousand Dollars, Aggravated Wire Fraud, and Commercial Tax Evasion:

"Rowan Alexander Mercer is sentenced to Twelve Years at the Illinois Department of Corrections Stateville Facility, with Zero Eligibility for Early Parole."

"Selina Vance Mercer, for Active Complicity in Receiving Stolen Property and Wire Fraud, is sentenced to Four Years at the Logan Correctional Center."

Rowan Mercer let out an ungodly, strangled shriek, his forehead collapsing onto the defense table, thrashing against his heavy steel chains as armed sheriff's deputies hauled him to his feet, dragging the weeping, ruined criminal down the subterranean concrete stairs into darkness forever.

Selina buried her face in her cuffed hands, screaming hysterically as she was dragged down the corridor behind her son.

My father wrapped his strong, protective arm around my shoulder, while the entire courtroom stood in unison, erupting into thunderous, standing applause that shook the high-altitude glass of the Daley Center.

Justice was absolute, complete, and uncompromised.
