Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Light of Beacon Hill

One Year Later.
The warm golden sunshine of late June poured over the sprawling stone terrace, manicured green lawns, and blooming wildflower gardens of our private seaside estate in Marblehead, overlooking Massachusetts Bay.
The dark memories of that cold November night, the three shots of tequila, the shattered bourbon glasses, and the sniper rifle in the ceiling had been permanently, miraculously incinerated into the light.
The historic coastal estate hummed with the rich, joyful music of a real life.
The heavy cedar French doors of the grand conservatory stood wide open to the summer breeze blowing off the sparkling, turquoise-blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean, carrying the sweet aroma of wild beach roses, ocean salt, and blooming lavender.
Down on the soft green clover of the grand lawn overlooking the water, our new golden retriever puppy, Barnaby, was playfully chasing colorful butterflies through the flowerbeds, barking with joyful, energetic yips.
Chasing the puppy with delighted, musical toddler laughter was fifteen-month-old Thomas Vincent Hale.
Little Thomas wore a bright yellow linen summer romper and tiny white leather sneakers, his dark curls dancing in the coastal breeze, his chubby cheeks rosy with vibrant, radiant health:
"DADA! LOOK! BARNABY FOUND A BUTTERFLY!" Thomas cheered in his clear, sweet toddler voice, waving his chubby hand toward the terrace.
Sitting on the wide cedar lounge steps wearing an elegant, flowing white linen wrap dress was Nora Bennett Hale.
Her dark chestnut hair was down, falling in soft waves over her shoulders in the gentle breeze. Her curvy, magnificent figure was embraced by the soft linen, celebrating her natural, breathtaking beauty without apology. On her left ring finger, catching the bright summer sun like an eternal star, rested an exquisite, custom-designed eight-carat emerald-cut diamond ring Vincent had placed on her finger on their wedding day six months earlier.
Her hand rested gently over her slightly rounded, four-month pregnant belly, feeling the faint, miraculous flutter of our second childâa healthy baby daughterâgrowing safely within her.
Vincent Hale walked out through the open French doors of the sunroom, dressed in comfortable linen trousers and an open-collared white summer shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his broad forearms, carrying a plate of warm peach scones fresh from the kitchen and two tall glasses of freshly squeezed iced lemonade with fresh mint.
Beside Vincent walked seventy-one-year-old Beatrice, laughing happily as she watched her grandson play on the grass.
Vincent set the plate onto the cedar table, stepped down beside Nora, and wrapped his strong, protective arms around her waist, pulling her gently against his broad chest.
He rested his chin against the top of her head, breathing in the sweet scent of ocean air, wild lavender, and clean pine that was uniquely theirs.
He placed his large, warm palm over her rounded belly, his thumb lightly caressing the fabric as our unborn daughter gave an energetic, miraculous flutter against his hand.
A deep, breathtaking smile softened every rugged line of Vincentâs handsome, scarred face.
"What are you thinking about, my sovereign queen?" Vincent murmured softly into the warm breeze, his deep baritone thick with an ancient, eternal devotion.
Nora leaned back into his solid, honest warmth, interlacing her fingers with his over their unborn child, listening to the calm, steady, miraculous rhythm of his heartbeat against her back.
She looked out across the sparkling blue water where our white container ships glided peacefully beneath the cloudless summer sky, while Barnaby trotted happily along the lawn with a tennis ball.
"I was thinking about an aisle in a crowded nightclub at one o'clock in the morning two years ago," Nora whispered softly, smiling as the golden sunshine warmed her face:
"When a tipsy, exhausted waitress poked Bostonâs most feared mafia boss in the chest and told him to move... and she found the bravest protector, the truest partner, and the most magnificent family in the world."
Vincent turned her gently in his arms, his slate-gray eyes softening with an intensity of love that took her breath away every single day.
He reached down, his thumb lightly stroking her glowing cheek, pressing a tender, lingering kiss against her lips:
"You didn't just poke my chest, Nora," Vincent smiled, his voice trembling with profound, eternal reverence:
"You woke up an empty manâs soul. You taught an empire what real courage looks like. You gave this fortress a heart. And you brought the sovereign light of home back to my life forever."
"DADA! MAMA! HUG!"
Thomasâs sweet, triumphant voice rang out across the grass as our son sprinted up the terrace steps, his little sneakers tapping happily against the warm cedar, launching his chubby frame straight into Vincentâs and Noraâs open arms.
We caught him together, swinging our laughing son high into the warm afternoon sunshine, before pulling Thomas tightly between our chests in an unbreakable, warm embrace.
Barnaby bounded up the steps with delighted tail wags, panting happily, resting his soft head against Noraâs knees as our entire family stood united in the golden light.

The nightclub floor was an ancient memory in the dust. The traitors were locked behind concrete walls where their greed could never cast a shadow.
And in that magnificent house above the sea, where an honest love had conquered the storm, stood an unbreakable dynasty of truth, sovereign courage, maritime triumph, and a love that reigned sovereign, safe, and triumphant in the everlasting light of home.
