Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Light of Hawthorne Bay

One Year Later.
The warm golden sunshine of late June poured over the sprawling stone terraces, manicured green lawns, and blooming wildflower gardens of Villa Caruso in Hawthorne Bay, New Jersey.
The dark memories of that cold library in North Harbor, the private plane ride, the trembling hands on the suitcase, and the four-million-dollar debt had been permanently, miraculously incinerated into the light.
The historic oceanfront estate hummed with the rich, joyful music of a real life.
The soaring French doors of the grand conservatory stood wide open to the summer breeze blowing off the sparkling, turquoise-blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean, carrying the sweet scent of wild honeysuckle, ocean pine, and blooming pink hydrangeas.
Down on the soft green clover of the grand lawn overlooking the cliffs, our golden retriever puppy, Barnaby, was playfully chasing colorful butterflies through the flowerbeds, barking with joyful, energetic yips.
Sitting on the wide cedar lounge steps wearing an elegant, flowing white linen summer wrap dress was Claire.
Her dark chestnut hair was down, falling in soft waves over her shoulders in the gentle coastal breeze. Her full, magnificent curves were embraced by the soft fabric, celebrating her natural, breathtaking beauty without apology. On her left ring finger, catching the bright summer sun like an eternal star, rested the six-carat Caruso diamond.
Her hand rested gently over her rounded, six-month pregnant belly, feeling the strong, miraculous flutter of our first child together—a healthy baby son—growing safely within her.
Vincent Caruso walked out through the open French doors of the sunroom, dressed in comfortable linen trousers and an open-collared white summer shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his broad forearms, carrying a wooden platter of warm, freshly baked sourdough bread—baked by Claire that morning in the villa's gourmet kitchen—and two tall glasses of freshly squeezed iced lemonade with fresh mint.
He set the platter onto the cedar table, stepped down beside Claire, and wrapped his strong, protective arms around her waist, pulling her gently against his broad chest.
He rested his chin against the top of her head, breathing in the sweet scent of fresh bread, ocean air, and wild lavender that was uniquely theirs.
He placed his large, warm palm over her rounded belly, his thumb lightly caressing the linen as our unborn son gave an energetic, miraculous kick against his hand.
A deep, breathtaking smile softened every rugged line of Vincent’s handsome, scarred face.
"What are you thinking about, my sovereign queen?" Vincent murmured softly into the warm breeze, his deep baritone thick with an ancient, eternal devotion.
Claire leaned back into his solid, honest warmth, interlacing her fingers with his over their unborn child, listening to the calm, steady, miraculous rhythm of his heartbeat against her back.
She looked out across the sparkling blue water where our white container ships glided peacefully beneath the cloudless summer sky, while Barnaby trotted happily along the lawn with a tennis ball.
"I was thinking about a cold library in North Harbor two years ago, Vincent," Claire whispered softly, smiling as the golden sunshine warmed her face:
"When a cruel father told me I was an invoice, packed my suitcase, and sold me to a dangerous stranger... and he gave me the bravest husband, the truest partner, and the most magnificent empire in the world."
Vincent turned her gently in his arms, his slate-gray eyes softening with an intensity of love that took her breath away every single day.
He reached down, his thumb lightly stroking her glowing cheek, pressing a tender, lingering kiss against her lips.
"You were never an invoice, Claire," Vincent smiled, his voice trembling with profound, eternal reverence:
"You were the treasure I had waited my entire life to find. You gave this empty fortress a soul. You taught a Sicilian king how to love. And you brought the sovereign light of home back to my heart forever."
"BARNABY! COME HERE, BOY!"
Vincent whistled, and the golden retriever puppy bounded up the cedar steps with delighted tail wags, panting happily, resting his soft head against Claire’s knees as our entire family stood united in the golden light.

The library door was an ancient memory in the dust. The traitors were locked behind concrete walls where their greed could never cast a shadow.
And in that magnificent house above the sea, where an honest love had conquered the storm, stood an unbreakable dynasty of truth, maternal courage, sovereign justice, and a love that reigned sovereign, safe, and triumphant in the everlasting light of home.
