PART 3: THE LIGHT AFTER THE STORM

A year passed as quickly as a blink of an eye, but for Clara, it was a completely new life. The girl was now nine years old, her cheeks a bit plumper, and her smile no longer held the timid hesitation of her first day stepping into the mansion.
Clara’s hair had grown longer, neatly braided by Elise every morning. She no longer startled at the sound of thunder, and most importantly, the small room near the library was now overflowing with teddy bears, storybooks, and vibrant drawings painted by her own hands.
However, the shadows of the past do not vanish overnight.
Old Scars
One weekend evening, Alexander was working late in his study when he heard a loud crash coming from the kitchen. He immediately stood up and walked quickly downstairs.
Under the dim kitchen light, Clara stood trembling in front of the sink. A premium porcelain plate lay shattered to pieces on the floor. The girl stood frozen, her hands tightly clutching her head, her eyes squeezed shut as if waiting for a familiar beating from her past.
"I'm sorry... I didn't mean to... Please don't lock me in the closet..." Clara whispered, her voice choking with tears.
Alexander stopped in his tracks. His heart tightened as he realized that even though Veronica was behind bars, her shadow still occasionally haunted the little girl's mind.
He didn't rush toward her, knowing it would frighten her more. Alexander slowly knelt on one knee, keeping a safe distance, and spoke in the warmest, calmest voice he could muster:
"Clara, look at me."
The girl slowly opened her eyes, tears streaming down her face.
"It’s just a plate," Alexander smiled gently, picking up one of the broken shards. "Things can be bought again, but there is only one Clara. You did nothing wrong."
At that moment, Elise hurried in, quickly cleaning up the fragments so Clara wouldn't get hurt. Alexander opened his arms wide, and this time, without a second of hesitation, Clara threw herself into his embrace, sobbing softly. He patted her back, silently promising himself to protect this peace at all costs.
An Uninvited Guest
A few months later, a special delivery letter arrived at the mansion. The sender was Julian Hale—Alexander’s brother, who was currently serving a suspended sentence and actively cooperating with the police to rectify his corporate wrongdoings.
Julian wanted to meet Alexander.
The meeting took place at a quiet cafe in the suburbs. Julian looked much thinner, but his eyes had regained a sense of serenity after shedding the heavy burden of guilt.
"You’ve raised her very well," Julian opened up, glancing at a photo of a radiantly smiling Clara that Alexander had accidentally revealed on his phone screen. "Thomas is definitely smiling down from heaven."
"Did you call me here just to tell me this?" Alexander asked coldly. The brotherly bond between them was still far from fully healed.
Julian shook his head and pushed an old notebook toward Alexander:
"This is Thomas’s work journal. Before his accident, he discovered that Veronica was embezzling funds from an orphanage charity. That's why she staged everything to cover her tracks. But more importantly..." Julian hesitated, "...inside this, Thomas wrote down his final wishes. He wrote that if anything were to happen to him, the only person he trusted to take care of Clara was you, Alexander."
Alexander opened the notebook in disbelief. Thomas Bennett’s handwriting appeared clearly on the pages. It turned out that the old friendship between him and Thomas was much deeper than he had ever realized. Thomas had always seen the kindness hidden behind Alexander’s cold exterior.
"So... it wasn't a coincidence," Alexander whispered. That fateful rainy night, when Clara ran away and ran directly into his car, it was perhaps the arrangement of a late father guiding his daughter to the safest place possible.
The Meaning of "Family"
Returning home after dark, Alexander found Clara sitting on the porch steps, hugging her teddy bear, her eyes fixed on the front gate as if waiting for him.
When she saw the headlights of Alexander’s car, she immediately jumped up and ran out into the yard, ignoring the light drizzle that had begun to fall.
"Mr. Alexander!"
Alexander stepped out of the car, quickly pulling his coat over her head to shield her from the rain, and lifted her up.
"Why were you sitting outside? It's freezing," he scolded gently, his voice full of affection.
"I was waiting for you to come home so we could have dinner together. Elise made the apple pie you like best!" Clara grinned from ear to ear, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck.
Stepping inside the warm house, the delicious aroma of baked pie filled the air. Alexander set Clara down, watching her chatter happily about school with Elise. He noticed that the picture Clara had drawn months ago was now carefully framed and hung in the most prominent spot right in the middle of the living room.
He had once been a lonely man, living in a vast but freezing "castle," viewing the world as a place driven only by transactions and betrayal. But now, the laughter of this child had illuminated every dark corner of his soul.

The real storm had passed. And under this roof, they were no longer two lonely souls drifting through life.
They had become a family.
