Chapter 7 - The Interrogation in Federal Holding

At 10:00 AM the following Tuesday, inside the subterranean maximum-security interview suite of the Metropolitan Correctional Center in downtown Chicago, thirty-five-year-old Markus Sterling-Vance sat handcuffed to a stainless-steel table.

He wore a drab, oversized orange corrections jumpsuit, having lost fifteen pounds over five days of pretrial detention after his bail was denied under federal racketeering and grand larceny statutes.

His hair was unwashed, uncombed, and wild, his face sallow and gray under the buzzing fluorescent tubes, his hands shaking in constant, rhythmic tremors. Stripped of his bespoke designer tuxedos, his luxury sports cars, his stolen millions, and his manufactured high-society arrogance, he looked like a broken, hollow shell of a man.

Sitting on the other side of the soundproof glass partition, weeping hysterically in an identical orange jumpsuit, was Chloe Croft. Her manicured acrylic nails were bitten to the quick, her designer blowout reduced to greasy, disheveled strands.

The heavy steel security door buzzed and clicked open with a concussive clatter:

CLANG.

Stepping into the room, dressed in his immaculate Army Service Green uniform, his six-foot-three frame casting a dark, terrifying shadow across the room, was Colonel Aaron Carter.

Beside Aaron walked myself, Dr. Sarah Vance, wearing an elegant royal-emerald tailored wool overcoat, my posture straight, majestic, and completely at peace.

Arthur Vance Senior strode behind us, his silver-headed walking cane striking the concrete floor with chilling finality:

CLACK. CLACK.

Markus and Chloe looked up, their bloodshot eyes widening with desperate, pathetic hope as they leaned across the cold steel table, their transport chains rattling against the anchor ring.

"Sarah...?! Aaron... Arthur, thank God!" Markus choked out, his voice cracking into raw, sniveling whimpers. "Did you talk to the United States Attorney?! Did Harrison tell you about the settlement offer?! It was Harrison’s idea, Sarah! I swear on our marriage! Harrison told me you were going to divorce me and leave me with nothing! He forced me to sign those Delaware shell agreements! You have to get me out of this cell, Sarah! The inmates in this block... they know what the charges are! They know I tried to steal from a children's hospital! I won't survive thirty days in this facility!"

Chloe wailed, clawing at the partition: "Sarah! Please! Tell the prosecutors I was just an innocent partner! Markus told me you were an estranged ex-wife who refused to sign the paperwork! I didn't know the sapphire belonged to your mother! I’ll sign over the Gold Coast penthouse! I’ll sign an eviction waiver! Just don't let them send me to a federal penitentiary for twenty years!"

Aaron did not sit down.

He stood towering over the table, his slate-gray eyes colder than an Arctic blizzard, looking down at the monsters who had treated his wife like disposable garbage.

"You measured the betrayal in carats, Markus," Aaron said softly, every word sharp as surgical diamond. "You stood in that kitchen, kissed her forehead while wearing another woman's perfume, and looked at your five-year-old son like he was an inconvenience."

"I made a mistake, Colonel!" Markus sobbed, tears and snot dripping freely onto the stainless steel. "The pressure of the corporate debts was breaking my mind! Forgive me... please, God, forgive me!"

Arthur Vance Senior stepped forward, sliding a single legal document across the table.

"Markus Sterling-Vance and Chloe Croft," Arthur spoke, his deep baritone rolling off the cinderblock walls like an executioner’s drumbeat. "Under the Universal Lineal Disinheritance, Preclusion, and Civil Asset Forfeiture Decree signed yesterday by Chief Judge Eleanor Bradley, your names have been permanently excised from every corporate, civic, and domestic registry in the state of Illinois."

Arthur pointed to the document.

"You have zero claim to the Vance estate. You have zero claim to the shipping trust. You leave this life with precisely zero dollars, zero assets, and one hundred and forty-two million dollars in non-dischargeable federal restitution debt."

Markus stared at the paper, his hands trembling so violently that the steel handcuffs rattled against the anchor ring.

"And Leo...?" Markus whispered, his voice barely audible. "Does my son know what I did?"

I looked down at him for the last time in my life.

May you like

"Leo knows that his mother is an unbroken sovereign, Markus," I answered quietly, turning toward the heavy steel door. "And he knows that real fathers protect their families... they don't steal their mother's jewelry to buy planes for their mistresses."

The steel door opened with a heavy magnetic clunk, and Aaron, Arthur, and I walked out into the corridor, leaving the prisoners' broken wails to echo uselessly against the concrete walls.
