Part 3: A Belated Confession and the Shocking Truth

I frowned, completely bewildered. "Involves me? Sarah, we have never met before."

Trembling, Sarah reached under her pillow and pulled out an old, yellowed envelope. She handed it to me with what little strength she had left.

"Fifteen years ago, do you remember a horrific traffic accident on Highway 5? A semi-truck lost its brakes and plowed directly into your parents' car..." Sarah’s voice choked up.

My entire body went numb. The most terrifying memory of my life came rushing back. That accident had torn both of my parents away from me, leaving me entirely alone in the world with a massive inheritance but a completely shattered soul.

"I remember..." I whispered, my breathing turning shallow. "The truck driver fled the scene that night, and the police never found him."

"That driver... was my father," Sarah sobbed. "He didn't mean to do it. The brakes failed, and he tried to steer away but it was too late. Terrified, and desperate to protect me—as I was a severely ill child at the time—he ran. He lived in agonizing guilt for the rest of his life and passed away in poverty last year."

I bolted upright, knocking my chair backward. The anger and pain I had suppressed for over a decade suddenly erupted. The daughter of the man who destroyed my family was lying right in front of me!

"Before he died, my father gave me this envelope," Sarah gasped, as the heart monitor began to beep frantically. "Inside is every penny he saved from a lifetime of hard labor to make amends, along with a letter of apology addressed to you. I spent the last year searching for you to hand it over, but I couldn't get access to a billionaire... until today, when my daughter accidentally crossed paths with you on the street."

She looked at me with pleading eyes, her breath fading. "My father was wrong... and I am paying for it with my life. But Sophie... she is innocent. She knows nothing. I’m not asking you to forgive my father... I only beg of you... please don’t hate Sophie..."

Right then, the door swung open. Sophie ran in, holding a melting ice cream cone. Seeing her mother slipping away and me standing there frozen, the little girl rushed to the bed, threw her arms around her mother, and burst into tears. "Mommy! Mommy, don't leave me! Mister, please save my mommy!"
