Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Queen

At seventy-three, most people think life’s story has already reached its final chapter. They believe that aging is a quiet retreat into the background, a gentle fading away while others take the stage.

They are wrong.

The autumn sun warmed my shoulders as I walked down the wooden steps of the porch and stepped into the garden. The soil was rich and dark, ready for the winter bulbs that would bloom when spring finally returned.

I bent down, my joints moving with surprising ease, and pressed a handful of tulip bulbs deep into the earth.

Thomas had thought my age was a vulnerability. He had looked at my silver hair, my medical bills, and my quiet demeanor, and assumed I was a relic to be discarded. He never understood the greatest power a person can possess: the power of patience, of observation, and of knowing your own worth when everyone else has forgotten it.

A car slowed down on the country road passing my house. A sleek black sedan. For a split second, I wondered if it was Thomas, coming back for one last desperate plea.

The car didn't stop. It accelerated smoothly and disappeared around the bend.

I stood up, brushing the dark soil from my gardening gloves, and looked out across the vast, open horizon. The sky was a brilliant, unblemished blue, stretching out as far as the eye could see.

My empire was secure. My mind was sharp. My heart was free.

I smiled, took off my gloves, and walked back inside my home—not as a victim, not as a discarded wife, but as the queen of my own destiny.
