Chapter 5 - Maya Opened the Door

Six months after Maya began working there, Arthur unlocked Isabelle's room.
He left the key in the door.
Mrs. Gordon noticed.
Said nothing.
Maya noticed.
Said nothing.
Three days passed.
Then Arthur asked:
“Would you help me?”
“With?”
“The room.”
Maya looked at him carefully.
“What do you want to do?”
“I don't know.”
“Then don't start.”
Arthur frowned.
“Why?”
“Because grief isn't a cleaning project.”
He stared.
Maya continued:
“Decide what you want first.”
It took another week.
Then Arthur knew.
Not erase.
Change.
They opened the curtains.
Dust floated in sunlight.
Arthur sat on the floor for an hour.
Maya sat near the doorway.
Not beside him.
Near enough.
Eventually he picked up Isabelle's stuffed rabbit.
“She called him Mr. Bun.”
Maya smiled.
“Original.”
“She was three.”
“Still.”
Arthur laughed.
They boxed some clothes.
Kept others.
Photographed drawings.
Arthur donated toys to a children's hospital except Mr. Bun.
That stayed.
Eleanor's things were harder.
Arthur cried.
Maya didn't touch him until he reached for her hand.
That distinction mattered.
By evening, the room was different.
Not empty.
Not preserved.
Alive enough to breathe.
Arthur looked around.
“What should it become?”
Maya shrugged.
“Guest room?”
“No.”
“Library?”
“Already have three.”
“Rich people are ridiculous.”
He smiled.
Eventually they turned it into a reading room.
Children's books remained on the lower shelves.
Adult books above.
Isabelle's drawings framed on one wall.
The door stayed open.
Always.
May you like
That was the first door Arthur reopened.
It wouldn't be the last.
