Chapter 3 — The Woman Who Chose Courage

Police officers arrived less than fifteen minutes later.
Not because Michael had called them that morning.
Because he had called them eleven days earlier.
Every recording...
Every witness...
Every photograph...
Every journal entry Sarah had secretly written...
had already been handed to his attorney.
Jessica was escorted toward the front gate.
She kept looking back.
"Michael!"
"You can't do this!"
"We're supposed to be married!"
He answered without raising his voice.
"No."
"I was supposed to marry the woman I thought you were."
Sophia suddenly let go of Matthew's hand.
She walked slowly toward Sarah.
Without saying a word...
she wrapped both little arms around the housekeeper's waist.
Sarah broke down.
Not loudly.
Just quiet tears she had been holding back for years.
Michael walked over.
"You stood between my daughter and someone twice your privilege."
Sarah looked embarrassed.
"I only did what anyone should."
Michael shook his head.
"No."
"You did what almost nobody did."
The guests lowered their eyes.
Because he was right.

Dozens had watched.
Only one person had stepped forward.
