Chapter 7: The Archive of Sins

The countdown glowed red.
9:41.
9:40.
Richard grabbed the detonator.
His fingers moved across the controls.
“This is linked to a second system.”
“Can you stop it?” Julian asked.
“No.”
“Then who can?”
Richard looked toward Elena.
“She can.”
Elena was kneeling beside Mara, tying fabric around her wounded thigh.
“I didn’t build a bomb.”
“You built the archive’s security architecture,” Richard replied. “The timer is using your encryption.”
Elena looked at the screen.
“It’s not counting down to an explosion.”
Richard stared at her.
“What?”
“It’s counting down to a purge.”
Edmund’s voice came through the shutter.
“You always were my cleverest child.”
Elena stood.
“The archive will erase itself. The explosives are a distraction.”
Julian looked at Richard.
“Your explosives are still active?”
“Yes.”
“So we have two disasters.”
“Three,” Thomas said.
He pointed toward the chapel entrance.
Smoke curled beneath the doors.
Someone had set fire to the mansion.
The ballroom guests began screaming again.
Julian grabbed Richard’s shirt.
“Release the security shutters.”
“I don’t control Edmund’s system.”
Celeste ran to the altar panel.
“I do.”
She entered a code.
Nothing happened.
“Father changed the access.”
Margaret laughed from where Thomas held her.
“Of course he did.”
Celeste turned on her.
“Help us.”
Margaret’s eyes were cold.
“You betrayed me.”
“Mara is bleeding. Hundreds of people are trapped.”
“They are not my concern.”
Elena crossed the chapel and slapped her mother so hard Margaret stumbled.
Mara gave a weak laugh from the floor.
“I’ve waited years to see that.”
Elena seized Margaret’s shoulders.
“What is the override?”
Margaret smiled through a split lip.
“Your birthday.”
“I tried it.”
“Not your birthday.”
Her gaze moved to Celeste.
“The day she became you.”
Celeste went still.
“What date?” Julian asked.
Celeste whispered, “October seventeenth.”
She entered 1017.
The panel flashed green.
Across the mansion, steel shutters began rising.
Fresh screams and chaotic footsteps filled the corridors as guests rushed toward the exits.
Thomas spoke into his radio.
“Evacuate everyone. East lawn. Move!”
The chapel barrier opened.
Edmund and his guards were gone.
Conrad remained restrained on the floor.
The hidden altar passage stood open.
7:52.
Elena helped Mara to her feet.
“The archive is below the north tower.”
Richard looked toward the smoke.
“The fastest route is through the main hall.”
“No,” Mara said. “There’s a nursery passage behind the chapel.”
They entered another hidden corridor.
Blackthorn Manor seemed built from secrets. Walls opened into stairways. Bookshelves concealed rooms. Air vents carried voices from one end of the estate to another.
As they moved, Julian supported Mara’s weight.
Celeste walked beside him.
“I meant what I said,” she told him.
“This isn’t the time.”
“There may not be another time.”
He looked at her.
“You lied to me every day.”
“I know.”
“You let me stand in front of hundreds of people preparing to marry someone who didn’t legally exist.”
“I know.”
“And somehow I still love you.”
Celeste’s eyes filled.
“That makes one of us worth saving.”
Julian stopped.
“No.”
Smoke thickened around them.
“You don’t get to decide you’re beyond saving,” he said. “But love doesn’t erase consequences. If we survive this, you tell the truth. All of it.”
“I will.”
“To the police. To the victims. To me.”
“I promise.”
Mara leaned against the wall.
“Romantic, but I may be dying.”
They continued.
The passage opened inside an abandoned nursery.
Three small beds stood beneath a painted ceiling of stars. Dust covered shelves filled with wooden toys.
Elena touched the tallest bed.
“This was mine.”
Mara pointed to the middle one.
“Mine.”
Celeste stood near the smallest.
For one quiet moment, the sisters looked at the childhood stolen from them.
Then a gun clicked.
Edmund sat in a rocking chair near the window.
His cane rested across his knees.
A pistol was aimed at Celeste.
“You were such obedient girls once.”
Elena stepped in front of her sisters.
“It’s over.”
“It ends when I decide.”
“Your guests are escaping.”
“Let them. Most will spend the rest of their lives wondering which of their secrets are in my archive.”
6:13.
Richard entered behind Julian.
“Move away from the door, Edmund.”
The old men faced each other.
“You were always impatient, Richard,” Edmund said.
“And you were always arrogant.”
“I taught you everything.”
“You taught me never to trust a Vale.”
Edmund smiled.
“Yet your son nearly married one.”
Julian saw movement outside the nursery window.
Federal agents crossing the lawn.
Edmund noticed too.
He pressed the gun harder toward Celeste.
“You will open the archive.”
“No,” she said.
“You watched what happened to Mara.”
Celeste stepped forward.
“And I learned something.”
“What?”
“You need us alive.”
Edmund’s hand tightened.
“But I don’t need all of you.”
He fired.
Julian shoved Celeste aside.
The bullet struck the wall.
Richard fired from the doorway.
Edmund’s gun fell from his hand.
Blood spread across his shoulder.
Thomas rushed forward and restrained him.
The old man stared at Richard.
“You missed.”
“No,” Richard said. “I chose not to kill you.”
“So noble.”
“I want you alive when the world learns what you are.”
Edmund laughed.
“You think the world wants truth? The world wants comfort.”
4:58.
Elena opened a panel beneath the nursery window.
Behind it was a biometric scanner.
She placed her palm against the glass.
A blue light moved across her skin.
“Identity confirmed,” a voice announced. “Elena Vale.”
Mara pressed her palm next.
“Identity confirmed. Mara Vale.”
Celeste hesitated.
The scanner recognized her under the identity used in the family’s secret system.
She placed her palm down.
“Identity confirmed. Celeste Vale.”
The floor beneath the three beds split open.
A circular staircase descended into white light.
The archive chamber below looked nothing like the rest of the mansion.
It was modern, sterile, and filled with servers humming behind glass walls.
At the center stood a black console.
3:46.
Elena rushed to it.
“The purge sequence was initiated remotely.”
“Can you stop it?” Julian asked.
“I need a master authorization.”
Edmund laughed from the stairs.
“Mine.”
Celeste turned.
“Give it to us.”
“No.”
Mara leaned against the console, pale from blood loss.
“Then everything disappears.”
“Exactly.”
Elena searched through menu screens.
“Wait.”
“What?” Julian asked.
“The archive was accessed three days ago.”
“By you?”
“No.”
She opened the access log.
A name appeared.
MARGARET VALE.
Everyone looked at her.
Margaret stood at the bottom of the stairs beside Thomas.
Her face was expressionless.
Elena whispered, “You copied it.”
Margaret said nothing.
“You already have the evidence,” Julian realized.
Margaret smiled.
“Not all of it.”
“What did you take?”
“Only the files I needed.”
“Needed for what?”
“To remove Edmund.”
The old man stared at his wife.
Margaret’s composure finally transformed into triumph.
“For forty years,” she said, “I watched him treat daughters, employees, politicians, and wives as possessions. I protected this family because I was waiting for the day I could own it.”
Mara looked sick.
“You imprisoned me to gain control?”
“You were leverage.”
Celeste shook her head.
“You’re worse than him.”
“No. I am simply the one who learned from him.”
2:11.
Margaret pulled a small drive from her necklace.
“This contains enough evidence to destroy Edmund, Conrad, and Richard.”
Julian stepped toward her.
“And enough missing evidence to protect you.”
“Precisely.”
She backed toward the stairs.
Thomas raised his weapon.
“Drop the drive.”
Margaret smiled.
“You should look behind you.”
Thomas turned.
A red laser appeared on Mara’s chest.
A sniper stood behind the glass server wall.
Margaret had one last loyal guard.
“Let me leave,” she said, “or Mara dies.”
1:22.
Elena’s hands moved desperately across the console.
“I can stop the purge, but someone must manually reset the cooling system.”
“Where?” Julian asked.
“Inside the server corridor.”
Behind the glass.
Where the sniper waited.
Julian ran toward the access door.
Celeste grabbed him.
“You’ll be killed.”
“Then distract him.”
“With what?”
Julian looked at her ruined wedding gown.
“The wedding he came to watch.”
The countdown reached fifty-nine seconds.
Celeste climbed onto the central platform.
She faced the sniper through the glass.
Then she raised both hands and shouted, “I know where the original ledger is!”
The sniper’s laser moved from Mara to Celeste.
Julian opened the access door and slipped inside.
Forty-three seconds.
The sniper turned.
Marcus fired through the doorway.
The bullet struck the sniper’s weapon, knocking it aside.
Julian reached the cooling panel.
Thirty-one seconds.
Three red handles stood before him.
“Which one?” he shouted.
Elena stared at the console.
“Left!”
He pulled it.
Nothing happened.
“Middle!”
He pulled the second.
Steam erupted from the pipes.
The countdown continued.
Fifteen seconds.
“Elena!”
Her eyes widened.
“It requires two people!”
Celeste ran into the server corridor.
Julian grabbed the third handle.
She took the first.
“Together,” he said.
Ten.
Nine.
Eight.
They pulled.
The cooling system roared.
The countdown stopped at three.
For one second, no one moved.
Then the screens across the archive lit up.
Thousands of files appeared.
The evidence had survived.
Margaret turned and ran up the stairs.
Richard went after her.
Julian followed.
By the time he reached the nursery, he heard a gunshot.
Margaret stood near the window, staring down at the blood spreading across her silver gown.
Richard held the pistol.
But he was not the one who had fired.
Edmund stood behind his wife with a hidden gun in his hand.
Margaret collapsed.
Edmund smiled at his daughters.
Then he raised the weapon toward Celeste.
May you like
Richard stepped into the line of fire.
The gunshot shook the room.
