Chapter 15 - The Empire We Built

The grand dining room of Grayhaven Manor was filled with the warm, golden light of dozens of tapered candles and the sound of genuine, unscripted laughter.
It was our anniversary—not the cold, miserable anniversary of the day Roman drove away into a blizzard, but the true anniversary of the night he walked back through our doors and surrendered his armor.
At the center of the long oak table, Maya and Leo were excitedly recounting their afternoon adventures building snow forts with Caleb, while Martha smiled warmly from the head of the table, cutting slices of a homemade triple-chocolate cake.
Roman sat across from me, his tailored jacket draped over the back of his chair, his shirtsleeves rolled up as he poured sparkling cider into the children’s glasses. He caught my eye across the table, raising his glass in a quiet, private toast just for us.
I raised my own crystal flute, the platinum and emerald rings catching the candlelight as my fingers wrapped around the stem.
My father’s five restaurants in Buffalo had been successfully reacquired under the Hart-Calder holding group three months ago, fully staffed, beautifully renovated, and operating at record profits. The greenhouses outside were expanding into the southern ridge of the estate. Our children were growing up safe, loved, and rooted in a home built by survival and fierce, unyielding devotion.
"To new beginnings," Roman said aloud, his deep, resonant voice cutting through the cheerful chatter of the room, though his eyes remained locked entirely on mine.

"To the empire we built together," I replied, smiling back at him with a heart that no longer felt like a sacrifice, but a victory.
The winter wind howled softly against the reinforced crystal windows outside, but inside Grayhaven Manor, the fire burned bright, the rooms echoed with laughter, and the ice had finally melted away for good.
