PART 3: CLASH AT THE GLASS TOWER

The Sterling Tower was a monument of glass and steel. The marble floors of the lobby were polished so bright I could see the reflection of my scuffed, worn boots. As Charles and I walked past security, the guards instantly snapped to attention, bowing their heads. They shot me looks of utter bewilderment and disgust—a dirty mechanic walking into a temple of immense wealth. But Charles Sterling’s presence beside me kept them completely silent.

We took a private elevator straight to the 45th floor. When the doors opened, a massive penthouse floor revealed itself, featuring panoramic glass walls overlooking the entire city. Laughter and the clinking of champagne flutes echoed from the grand conference room. Today was Victoria Sterling's day of triumph. She stood at the podium, radiant in a tailored power suit, her hair in a flawless updo, surrounded by dozens of wealthy shareholders and reporters.

"...And Sterling Motors' goal this year is to completely eliminate obsolete, manual repair shops in the suburbs," Victoria’s voice boomed over the PA system, brimming with confidence. "We bring professionalism, speed, and technology. Small-scale garages simply do not have the infrastructure to compete with us."

Right then, Charles Sterling slammed open the double oak doors of the boardroom. The loud crash caused the entire room to fall dead silent. Every eye pivoted toward the entrance.

Victoria smiled warmly when she saw her father. "Father! You made it. I thought you weren't attending..." Her smile instantly froze as her eyes landed on me—the mechanic she had degraded the night before, still in my dirty work clothes, holding a battered cardboard box.

"Ryder Callaway?" Victoria stammered, her voice a mix of fury and panic. "What are you doing here? Who allowed a man like you into this building? Security! Escort this man out immediately!"

A couple of guards stepped forward, but Charles Sterling raised a single hand, and they froze like stone.

"I brought him here, Victoria," Charles said, walking down the center aisle. His voice wasn't loud, but its authority commanded the entire room.

"Father... what is wrong with you? This is a shareholders' meeting. This man is a fraud! Yesterday, he tried to rip me off at his pathetic little garage," Victoria scrambled, trying to regain her composure, explaining to the shareholders with deep contempt. "He demanded $199 just for touching my car. I called his bluff."

Charles Sterling walked straight up to the stage, standing right next to his daughter. He turned to me and nodded. I stepped up and slammed the cardboard box onto the luxurious mahogany executive table. The loud crash echoed. I opened the box, pulled out the split rubber hose and the rusted thermostat, and dropped them right next to Victoria’s microphone.

"This is what saved your life and your car last night, Ms. Sterling," I spoke clearly into the microphone, my voice echoing through the opulent hall. "You were running your car with zero coolant, causing massive thermal pressure. If these two parts hadn't been replaced right then, your engine would have thrown a rod and blown up on Interstate 95. I stayed until 8:00 PM, using my own inventory to ensure you made it safely."

I pulled out the signed $199 invoice and laid it next to the rusted metal. "And here is your bill. You signed the work order, but you refused to pay because you thought a small-town mechanic wasn't worth your money. You threw a ten-dollar bill at me like I was a beggar."

Whispers erupted across the room. Shareholders began murmuring angrily. Victoria’s face turned from a flush crimson to a ghostly pale. She looked at the press reporters, who were already flashing their cameras rapidly.

"You're... you're lying! There's no proof those parts came from my vehicle!" Victoria yelled, completely losing her polished composure.

"The security cameras at Mr. Callaway's shop recorded everything," Charles Sterling cut his daughter off coldly. "And I personally verified the black box data and the maintenance logs on your SUV this morning. You lied, Victoria. You didn't just steal from a working man; you dragged the Sterling name through the mud."

Charles turned to face the entire board of directors. "Shareholders, the man standing before you is Ryder Callaway. Ten years ago, he walked through enemy fire to save my nephew—the rightful heir to the Sterling Trust. If it weren't for him, our family would be incomplete. Yet my daughter, the woman standing at this podium representing the face of our company, used her arrogance to trample on the savior of our family."

An suffocating silence fell over the room. Victoria stumbled back a step, her eyes wide with shock and terror. She never could have dreamed that the poor mechanic she despised had such a terrifyingly deep connection to her own bloodline.
