Chapter 10 - What We Chose to Inherit

Dad sat behind thick glass at the Multnomah County Detention Center.

He wore a gray uniform. Without his expensive suit and controlled expression, he looked older than Grandpa.

I picked up the phone.

He did the same.

“You came,” he said.

“What do you want?”

“To give you the truth.”

“You have spent months manufacturing your version of the truth.”

He smiled.

“You’re not my daughter.”

The words landed without emotion at first.

Then their meaning spread slowly through me.

Dad watched my face.

“Your mother had an affair when we were young. You were born eleven months after I learned about it.”

“Who was he?”

“You already know him.”

My mind moved through every man in the story.

Walter.

Daniel.

Calvin.

Dad saw the fear in my eyes and enjoyed it.

“Walter Sloan,” he said.

I almost laughed.

The claim was too perfect.

Too cruel.

“Walter left Portland years before I was born.”

“He came back more than once.”

“Do you have proof?”

Dad slid a photocopy against the glass.

It appeared to be an old letter from Mom to Walter.

Claire deserves to know you are her father.

The date was thirty-four years earlier.

My hands trembled.

Dad leaned closer.

“Arthur knew. That’s why he protected you. That’s why he gave you access to everything. Not because you were loyal. Because you were Walter’s child and his guilt never ended.”

I stared at the letter.

“Why tell me now?”

“Because you’re about to sacrifice your life for a family that was never yours.”

He smiled.

“Bennett Marine is not your inheritance, Claire. You are just the final payment Arthur owes Walter.”

I left without answering.

Mom was staying in a protected residence while cooperating with prosecutors. She had confessed to fraud, forgery, and her role in arranging Dr. Kline’s access to Grandpa.

She agreed to meet me.

When I placed the letter in front of her, all color left her face.

“Is Walter my father?”

“No.”

Her answer came immediately.

“Then what is this?”

“A fake.”

“Dad had it before he was arrested.”

“Richard has been forging documents for years.”

“Did you have an affair?”

Mom looked down.

“Yes.”

My chest tightened.

“With whom?”

“Calvin Reese.”

The room seemed to shift.

She began crying.

“It lasted three months. Your father was always angry, always trying to prove himself to Arthur. Calvin listened to me. I was weak and selfish.”

“Is Calvin my father?”

“No. We had a DNA test when you were a baby.”

“Who arranged it?”

“Richard.”

“Did you see the result?”

She hesitated.

“No.”

Dad had controlled the result.

“What happened to the original letter?”

“There was no letter to Walter.”

Mom looked at the copy again.

“But the
