Chapter 18 - The Titanium Cylinder

The hum of the ceiling fan overhead felt deafeningly loud in the sudden, suffocating silence of the waiting room. Harrison Vance didn't flinch at Ghost’s growl; he merely adjusted his gold-plated cufflinks, his gaze sliding from Ethan’s rigid stance to the scars lining my hands.

"You're wasting your breath, Vance," I said, stepping past the examination counter until I was standing within arm's reach of the briefcase. "You think you can buy back a biological surveillance program with offshore accounts like we're corporate middle managers looking for a golden parachute?"

"It's not a bribe, Dr. Cole. It's an acquisition," Vance replied calmly, his eyes narrowing slightly as he tapped the side of the titanium cylinder resting inside the leather case. "Project Oberon was never just about tracking operational units in hostile territory. The neural-link architecture implanted in select K-9 assets was phase one. Phase two was designed for human integration. And the only living subject who successfully processed the complete dual-hemisphere neural bridge isn't buried in the rubble of the annex."

Vance’s gaze shifted deliberately down toward Ghost.

Ethan’s breathing hitched. A muscle jumped sharply in his jaw. "You son of a bitch. The neural bridge wasn't just stored in the animal's cognitive mapping... it requires an active biological sync to execute the final compilation."

"Precisely, Lieutenant," Vance nodded, his tone chillingly polite. "The public data dump you pushed to the global oversight nodes last month? It was a shell file. A brilliantly executed diversion, I'll grant you—it kept the congressional bloodhounds snapping at empty servers for three weeks while we re-grouped. But the actual decryption keys—the cryptographic seed required to unlock the core human-trial database—live inside the dog's long-term memory cortex. And the only way to retrieve them intact is via direct bio-extraction."

"Extraction means termination," I said, my voice dropping an octave as a cold fury began to flood my veins, burning away every trace of fear. "You're talking about killing him."

"We're talking about securing classified state property," Vance corrected smoothly, reaching into his suit coat. "And cooperation is entirely optional. Though I should mention..."

Vance pressed a small button on a silver key fob hidden within his palm.

From outside the clinic, the sharp, unmistakable sound of idling diesel engines echoed off the asphalt. Through the front window, two unmarked black transit vans swung off Hampton Boulevard, cutting across the sidewalk and blocking both lanes of traffic in front of the building. The side doors slid open with loud mechanical clicks, revealing four heavily armed contractors in matte-black body armor stepping out onto the wet pavement, their suppressed short-barreled rifles pointed straight at our front glass.

"I brought a much larger team this time," Vance said softly, not even bothering to look out the window. "And unlike poor Vance and his boys last month, these operators are Tier-One contractors seconded directly out of a private security black site in the Azores. They won't negotiate. And they certainly won't miss."
