Chapter 15 - A Tiny Suit, A True Empire

Three months later.

The grand courtyard of the Valente estate on the Hudson was covered in a pristine blanket of fresh December snow.

Massive evergreen wreaths tied with scarlet velvet ribbons hung from the wrought-iron balconies. In the grand ballroom, two hundred guests—the elite of New York high society, senators, judges, and the heads of the Five Families—mingled under the warm glow of crystal chandeliers, drinking vintage champagne and speaking in hushed, reverent tones.

At the center of the high table sat Elena Valente.

My ivory satin gown trailed gracefully onto the marble floor, the emerald ring on my finger catching the sparkling candlelight. For four years, I had walked these same corridors with my head down, terrified that a dropped glass would cost me my life. Tonight, when the most powerful men in the city approached the table, they bowed at the waist, kissed my knuckles, and called me Donna Elena.

To my right, Luca sat in his high-backed velvet chair, looking every inch the undisputed king of New York.

His arm was draped securely behind my chair, his thumb gently caressing my shoulder through the satin fabric. He had purged every traitor, consolidated every shipping route, and established an era of terrifying, absolute peace across the five boroughs.

Yet as the orchestra began to play a slow, elegant waltz, Luca’s eyes weren't watching the politicians or the capos.

He was watching the grand mahogany staircase.

The double doors at the top of the stairs swung open.

Marco, dressed in an immaculate tuxedo, stepped forward and announced with full ceremonial gravity:

“Presenting the Executive Vice President of the Valente Family.”

The entire ballroom fell into a hushed, enchanted silence.

Mia walked down the red-carpeted stairs with the slow, regal posture of a tiny empress.

She wore a custom-tailored dark charcoal tuxedo, complete with a silk bowtie, patent-leather dress shoes, and her signature gold-rimmed sunglasses perched firmly on her small nose. Under her arm, she carried Barnaby the bear, dressed in his matching miniature suit.

She didn't run. She walked down each step deliberately, holding her head high, completely unbothered by the two hundred powerful adults staring at her.

When she reached the bottom of the stairs, the crowd parted like the Red Sea.

She marched straight toward the high table, stopping directly in front of Luca.

She pushed her sunglasses up her nose with one finger.

“Don Luca,” she announced, her voice echoing clearly over the silent ballroom. “The outer driveway is clear of bad men. I checked with the guards.”

A quiet ripple of delighted laughter swept through the assembled bosses and their wives.

Luca didn't laugh. He treated her report with absolute, solemn respect.

He rose from his seat, stepped around the grand table, and sank slowly to both knees right there in front of the entire American mafia.

The Don of New York knelt before a three-year-old girl in a tuxedo.

He reached out and adjusted her tiny silk bowtie with his massive, scarred hands.

“Outstanding work, Vice President,” Luca said softly, his slate-gray eyes brimming with pure pride. “Did you bring the official documents?”

Mia nodded solemnly. She reached into her tiny breast pocket and pulled out a small, folded piece of drawing paper.

Luca unfolded it carefully.

It was a crayon drawing: three figures standing hand-in-hand before a giant black house. A tall man with a gun, a woman in a green dress, and a tiny girl wearing sunglasses, holding a brown bear under a bright yellow sun.

At the bottom, written in wobbly purple crayon, were four words:

THE VALENTE FAMILY EMPIRE.

Luca looked up from the drawing. He swallowed the thick knot in his throat, then leaned forward and kissed Mia’s forehead.

He scooped her up into his left arm, where she nestled against his neck with a contented sigh, resting her head on his shoulder as if the most dangerous man in the underworld was nothing more than her personal guardian angel.

Luca turned to face the grand ballroom, his free hand reaching out to pull me up beside him.

I stood at his side, my fingers interlaced with his, looking out over the glittering room.

The two hundred guests rose to their feet as one. Vincent Gambino raised his crystal glass of champagne high into the air.

“To Don Luca!” Gambino bellowed, his voice ringing through the estate. “To Donna Elena! And to the future of the Valentes!”

“To the Valentes!” the entire room roared in unison, two hundred crystal glasses catching the golden light.

Luca looked down at me, his smile warm, steady, and infinite.

“We’re not invisible anymore, Elena,” he whispered against my lips.

May you like

I smiled, resting my head against his chest, listening to the calm, steady heartbeat of the man who had burned an empire just to keep my little girl safe.

“No, Luca,” I whispered back, watching Mia wave happily at the crowd with her teddy bear. “We’re home.”
