Chapter 17 - The Echo in the Vault

The silver Honda was gone from the service driveway, replaced by two unmarked black trucks parked bumper-to-bumper across the estate's rear access road.

Gabriel didn't bring Eli into the house through the front doors. They took the stone path down by the boat ramp, cutting through the old timber woodshop. The scent of sweet sawdust felt strangely fragile now, like a dream that could be wiped away by a single round of lead.

"Inside," Gabriel said, guiding Eli into the ground-floor study and locking the heavy interior door.

Eli slumped into an armchair, his walking cane resting between his knees. His lower lip quivered, but he clamped his teeth down, fighting the tears with a furious, defiant dignity that made Gabriel’s heart ache.

"I thought you said they were never coming back," Eli said, his voice small and accusing. "You said the police had all the books."

Gabriel knelt in front of him, taking both of the boy’s hands in his. "The legal system has cracks, Eli. Men like Dominic Vane spend millions finding them. But I promised you this house would never be a prison again. And I promised you I would never let anyone hurt you. Do you trust me?"

Eli stared at his father’s eyes for a long, agonizing moment before nodding slowly. "Yes."

"Stay with Hannah in the study. No locks. No bunkers. Just wait for me to clear the outer perimeter with Marcus."

Hannah stepped between them as Gabriel stood up. Her eyes were hard, blazing with the familiar fire she had carried during her first week at the mansion. "You aren't going out there alone, Gabriel."

"Marcus is twenty minutes out by highway," Gabriel said, sliding his hand beneath the edge of the mahogany bookshelves and pressing a concealed release. A narrow panel popped open, revealing the matte-black frame of his tactical sidearm. "Leo Moretti isn't a syndicate mastermind, Hannah. He's a cleanup man. If he cut his ankle monitor, he isn't running to Canada. He’s coming to finish the only loose end that can connect Dominic Vane to the bomb money: the private banking ledger Claire hid."

"We gave Claire's ledgers to the U.S. Attorney," Hannah argued.

"We gave them the corporate ledgers," Gabriel said grimly, chambering a round with a sharp clack. "Claire kept a personal diary of account codes. She hid it inside the one place on this property no one has searched because no one thought to look."

"Where?"

Gabriel looked toward the grand foyer. "Under the marble hearth in the main salon. Directly beneath the family portrait."

Before Hannah could answer, the security tablet on the kitchen wall let out three soft, chime-like pings.

The screen blinked.

The camera at the south gate showed an old gray delivery van idling on the shoulder of Route 127. A tall man in a black windbreaker had stepped through the wild hydrangeas, holding an electronic wire cutter against the estate's fiber-optic junction box.

The screen flickered once, turned to static, and died.

"He's cutting the lines," Hannah whispered.

"He thinks I’m still the arrogant billionaire who hides behind private security teams," Gabriel said, clicking the safety off his weapon. "Stay here with Eli. Keep the phone on emergency dispatch."

Gabriel stepped into the darkened hallway, melting into the shadows of the mansion he had built, ready to turn the ground beneath an intruder's feet into a cemetery.
