Part 1: The Woman on Her Knees

The chandelier hung like a frozen waterfall of diamonds, spilling gold light across the Vance ballroom. Victoria Vance adjusted her bronze silk gown in the mirror, admiring herself while a woman in a grey uniform scrubbed the marble at her feet.

"Hurry up, you lowly servant," Victoria snapped.

Genevieve said nothing. She never did. Deaf and dumb, they assumed — because she let them.

Chloe, the bride-to-be in her ivory Vera Wang gown, stepped over Genevieve's fingers with her heel, missing by an inch on purpose. "Know your place," she whispered. "This is the Vance Estate. Not your trailer park."

Then footsteps. Fast. Frantic.

Ethan Vance burst into the ballroom still in his tuxedo, his face bone-white. He didn't look at his bride. He didn't look at his mother. He dropped to his knees in front of the maid.

"Chairwoman Consecour," he choked out. "Forgive my family. Please."

The room went silent enough to hear the chandelier's crystals tremble.

Genevieve rose. Slowly. The stoop of her shoulders vanished; something colder, sharper took its place.

"The wedding is cancelled," she said. "And I want every cent of my investment back. Tonight."

Victoria's hand flew to her throat. She knew that name. Consecour — the silent billionaire who quietly owned ninety percent of the Vance Group's debt.

"You think your son built his empire on your money, Victoria?" Genevieve peeled off her name tag and let it fall. "I bought this mansion last week. I wanted to see the family my CEO was marrying into."

Her eyes moved to Chloe, who was shaking now.

"I got my answer."
