Chapter 7 - The Boardroom Ambush

The morning sun broke over the city skyline, casting a cold, monolithic shadow from the Sterling Enterprises skyscraper across the bustling financial district. On the seventy-fifth floor, inside the soundproof, bullet-glass walls of the executive boardroom, the tension was thick enough to choke on.
Seated around the massive slab of polished mahogany were the twelve members of the board of directors. These were men and women of immense wealth and influence, yet they all sat in uneasy silence, their eyes fixed on the head of the table.
Eleanor Sterling stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, her posture perfectly rigid. Despite fleeing a state police raid through a muddy forest less than eight hours ago, she looked flawless. Her bespoke ivory suit was unwrinkled; her makeup expertly concealed the dark circles of a sleepless, frantic night. Her lawyers had worked until dawn, burying the State Bureau of Investigation in injunctions and jurisdictional disputes, buying her a precious, twenty-four-hour window of freedom.
She needed less than one.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Eleanor began, her voice a soothing, melancholic melody that echoed in the cavernous room. "I called this emergency session because our legacy is in grave, immediate danger. Last night, tragedy struck our family on multiple fronts."
She paused, pressing a tissue to the corner of her eye in a masterful display of fabricated grief.
"As you know, Margaretâs cognitive decline has been steep. Last night, in a bout of severe dementia, she wandered into the abandoned Blackwood estate and accidentally started a fire. She is currently in state custody, heavily sedated for her own safety." Eleanor sighed, leaning against the leather chair. "But worse still⊠my son, Julian, has suffered a complete psychotic break."
Nervous murmurs rippled around the table.
"Julian assaulted hospital staff, kidnapped his own newborn child, and vanished into the night," Eleanor lied flawlessly, her eyes scanning the room to ensure she had their absolute attention. "He is paranoid, violent, and utterly incapable of managing his own affairs, let alone inheriting the controlling fifty-one percent of this empire."
She slid a thick, leather-bound folder onto the mahogany table.
"This is an emergency conservatorship petition, drafted by our legal team. It temporarily transfers Julianâs voting rightsâand physical custody of his childâdirectly to me until he can be institutionalized and treated. I need a majority vote to bypass the standard waiting period. We must protect the company's stock value before the press catches wind of his madness."
Richard Vance, an elderly board member who had served alongside Margaret for decades, frowned. "Eleanor, this is highly irregular. Stripping Julian of his inheritance rights without a medical evaluationâ"
"Julian is a fugitive, Richard!" Eleanor snapped, letting a perfectly calculated edge of hysteria bleed into her voice. "He is a danger to himself and to the Sterling bloodline! If you do not sign this petition today, the SEC will freeze our assets by Monday morning."
The board members exchanged uneasy glances. The threat of plummeting stock prices was the only language they truly understood. One by one, hands began to reach for the Montblanc pens resting in front of them.
Eleanorâs lips twitched upward into a phantom smile. She had won.
Clack. Clack. Clack.
The heavy, electronic locks of the boardroom doors disengaged.
Everyone turned. The massive oak doors swung open, hitting the rubber stops with a violent thud.
Julian Sterling walked into the room.
He didn't look like a madman, but he didn't look like a polished CEO, either. He wore the same dark trench coat from the night before, still stained with mud and rain from the cliffs of Blackwood Point. His jaw was covered in dark stubble, his eyes burning with a terrifying, predatory calm. He looked exactly like a man who had walked through hell and had come back to burn the devil.
Flanking him was Marcus, wearing a sharply tailored suit and carrying a steel briefcase. And right behind Marcus stood two uniformed officers of the State Bureau of Investigation.
Eleanorâs breath hitched, her manicured hands gripping the edge of the table so tightly her knuckles turned white.
"Security!" Eleanor shrieked, the polished facade instantly shattering. "How did he get up here? Guards, remove this man from the building immediately!"
"Stand down," Julian commanded, his voice rumbling like a thunderclap. The two corporate security guards at the door hesitated, looking at the state troopers, and wisely backed away.
Julian walked slowly to the head of the table. He didn't look at the board members. He locked eyes solely with his mother.
"I am an active board member and the legal proxy for the majority shareholder," Julian said, his voice dripping with lethal authority. "I don't need an invitation to my own boardroom."
"You are a fugitive!" Eleanor spat, pointing a trembling finger at him. "Officers, arrest him! He kidnapped my grandson!"
Marcus stepped forward, popping the latches on his briefcase. "My client hasn't kidnapped anyone, Mrs. Sterling. His wife and child are resting safely at an undisclosed, federally protected location. We are here to present a motion of immediate termination for the current interim CEO, Eleanor Sterling, on the grounds of gross corporate malfeasance, fraud, and attempted murder."
The boardroom erupted into chaotic shouts. Richard Vance stood up, his face pale. "Attempted murder? Julian, what on earth is going on?"
Julian didn't answer. He simply reached into his pocket, pulled out a small black flash drive, and plugged it directly into the console on the table. He tapped a few keys, bypassing the security firewall with his executive clearance.
The massive, hundred-inch 4K screen at the end of the room flickered to life.
It wasn't a spreadsheet. It was the high-definition video from Margaretâs smartwatch.
The board watched in suffocating, horrified silence as the footage played. They heard the industrial roar of the walk-in freezer. They saw Eleanorâs twisted, unhinged face as she violently ripped the shawl from an eighty-two-year-old woman. They heard her cold, venomous voice: "If you wonât sign, letâs see if a little cold changes your mind."
They watched as Eleanor locked the heavy steel door, trapping the matriarch of the Sterling empire in a freezing metal box, and smiled as she walked away.
When the video cut to black, the silence in the boardroom was absolute. You could hear a pin drop. Several board members looked physically sick.
"That is a fabrication!" Eleanor screamed, her voice cracking in pure desperation. "Itâs a deepfake! AI manipulation! Julian is trying to frame me to steal the company!"
"The digital forensics team at the SBI authenticated the metadata at three o'clock this morning," Marcus stated coldly, sliding a stack of official police reports across the mahogany table. "The original recording device is in federal custody."
"It doesn't matter!" Eleanor slammed her hands on the table, leaning forward like a cornered animal. "Even if it were true, Margaret is unfit! And Julian has no legal right to seize control of the trust! The original founder's clause strictly states that only a biological heir of the Sterling bloodline can inherit the fifty-one percent. And Julian..."
Eleanor let out a wicked, breathless laugh, looking at the board. If she was going down, she was taking him with her. "Julian is adopted! He is a fraud! My late husband and I adopted him in secret! He has no Sterling blood in his veins! Legally, he owns nothing!"
Gasps echoed around the room. Richard Vance clutched his chest, staring at Julian in shock.
Julian didn't flinch. He didn't blink. He simply looked at Eleanor with a mixture of profound pity and absolute disgust.
"You're half right, Eleanor," Julian said quietly. "Arthur wasn't my biological father."
He nodded to Marcus. Marcus pulled a yellowed, fragile document from a protective plastic sleeve and laid it in the center of the table. It was a birth certificate, authenticated with a raised federal seal, alongside a freshly printed DNA sequence report.
"But I am not adopted," Julian continued, his voice echoing in the silent room. "My mother was Margaretâs biological daughter, who died in a car accident when I was an infant. You and Arthur claimed me as your own to secure your position in this company because Arthurâyour beloved, late husbandâwas an illegitimate child. He had no Sterling blood."
Eleanor froze, her pale blue eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated terror.
"I am Margaretâs biological grandson," Julian declared, slamming his hand onto the table, the sound ringing like a gunshot. "I am the sole, rightful heir to the Sterling empire. And you are nothing but a murderer who poisoned my uncle to steal a throne that was never yours to begin with."
The room spun into absolute pandemonium. Board members were shouting, calling for the legal team, demanding answers. The state troopers stepped forward, pulling handcuffs from their belts, advancing on Eleanor.
Eleanor backed away from the table, her breath coming in short, erratic gasps. Her empire was burning to the ground before her very eyes. Her power, her wealth, her immaculate reputationâshredded into pieces by the boy she had tried to control.
"Mrs. Sterling," the taller trooper said, grabbing her arm. "You are under arrest for the attempted murder of Margaret Sterling, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. You have the right to remain silent."
As the cold steel clamped around her wrists for the second time in twenty-four hours, Eleanor didn't fight. She didn't scream. She simply locked her terrifying, pale eyes onto Julian.
And then, she smiled.
It was a smile that made the blood freeze in Julian's veins. It was the smile of a woman who had already anticipated her own downfall.
"Checkmate, Julian," Eleanor whispered, leaning in close as the officers dragged her past him. "You won the boardroom."
Julian frowned, a sick feeling of dread pooling in his stomach. "It's over, Eleanor. You're going to prison for the rest of your life."
"Perhaps," Eleanor murmured, her eyes dancing with a sick, triumphant glee. "But did you really think I would come here this morning without a backup plan? Did you really think I didn't know you would bring your little lawyer friend with you?"
Julianâs heart stopped. He looked at Marcus.
"Where is Vance?" Eleanor asked softly, her voice carrying over the chaos of the room. "Did you notice my head of security isn't here, Julian? Do you know where I sent him while you were busy playing corporate king?"

The color vanished from Julianâs face. Clara. The baby.
"The safe harbor," Eleanor whispered, baring her teeth. "Isn't so safe anymore. Run, Julian. Run as fast as you can. Because by the time you reach them, your biological bloodline will be nothing but a memory."
