Chapter 9 - The Trap Inside the Mansion

Martin Shaw disappeared before police reached his office.

His assistant claimed he had left for a conference.

His private jet remained at the airport.

His passport had not been used.

His black SUV was found in an underground garage with its plates removed.

Detective Torres ordered protection for Caleb and Sophie.

Caleb refused to return home.

“The house isn’t safe.”

Nora sat across from him inside the police conference room.

“It might be the only place Martin thinks he can still control.”

Torres looked at her.

“What are you suggesting?”

Nora swallowed.

“He’ll come back.”

“Why?”

“Because Adrian hid more than documents.”

Caleb stared at her.

“How do you know?”

“Martin asked me about a key.”

“What key?”

“I don’t know.”

Then Caleb remembered the drawing.

The rejected gift Sophie had made.

Three figures beneath a rainbow.

He had assumed they were Caleb, Nora, and Sophie.

But one figure had something small and yellow in its hand.

“Sophie.”

She looked up.

“The picture you drew.”

“What about it?”

“Who are the three people?”

She hesitated.

“Me. You. Uncle Adrian.”

Nora closed her eyes.

Caleb’s heart began pounding.

“Why is Adrian holding something?”

“A key.”

Every adult in the room went silent.

“What key?”

Sophie shrugged.

“He gave it to me before he went away.”

Caleb crouched.

“Where is it?”

“In my treasure box.”

“Where’s your treasure box?”

“At home.”

Police surrounded the mansion before sunset.

Torres insisted nobody enter until tactical officers cleared it.

Sophie’s treasure box was found beneath her bed.

Inside were plastic rings, old birthday candles, two polished stones, a photograph of Adrian—

and a brass key.

A number was engraved into it.

B-17.

Nora stared.

“I know that.”

Caleb turned.

“What?”

“The old Bennett headquarters.”

His father’s original office building had been closed for renovation years earlier.

The basement contained private archival vaults.

Vault B-17 had belonged to Caleb’s father.

Martin had overseen the building after his death.

“Then that’s where he’s going,” Torres said.

Police established surveillance.

Caleb wanted to go.

Torres refused.

“You’re the target.”

“That’s exactly why he’ll show himself.”

“No.”

Nora surprised everyone.

“Caleb’s right.”

He looked at her.

Nora continued.

“Martin knows Caleb has the key now. If Caleb disappears behind police protection, Martin runs. If Caleb appears to believe the danger is over…”

“He comes for the key,” Torres finished.

The plan was dangerous.

But legal.

Caleb returned to the mansion with visible security reduced.

Sophie stayed elsewhere under police protection.

Nora remained in custody.

At 10:17 p.m., Caleb sat alone in the dark living room.

At 10:42, the alarm system flickered.

At 10:44, a rear camera went offline.

At 10:46, Caleb heard footsteps.

Martin Shaw entered through the library.

He looked exactly as Caleb remembered.

Gray hair.

Tailored suit.

Calm expression.

“Caleb.”

Caleb remained seated.

“Martin.”

“You look better.”

“I stopped taking the medication you paid for.”

Martin smiled.

“So we’re past pretending.”

“Yes.”

“Where’s the key?”

Caleb almost laughed.

“You tried to kill my brother and you think I’m giving you a key?”

Martin’s face remained relaxed.

“Adrian made mistakes.”

“He discovered you were stealing.”

“Your father built an empire and left it to two boys who didn’t understand what it required.”

“You stole from us.”

“I preserved what mattered.”

“You murdered him.”

Martin’s expression changed.

Only a fraction.

“I didn’t intend for Adrian to die.”

Caleb’s hidden recorder transmitted every word to police outside.

“What did you intend?”

“To frighten him.”

“By ramming his car on a bridge?”

Martin sighed.

“My driver panicked.”

Caleb’s pulse accelerated.

A confession.

“Who was driving?”

Martin smiled.

“You really don’t remember.”

“Tell me.”

“It doesn’t matter.”

“It matters to me.”

Martin stepped closer.

“Give me the key.”

“No.”

A gun appeared in Martin’s hand.

Caleb’s breathing stopped.

Police were supposed to move if a weapon appeared.

But Martin positioned himself where the external camera had no view.

“You always were stubborn.”

“You can shoot me.”

Caleb forced his voice steady.

“But you still won’t know where the key is.”

Martin stared.

Then smiled.

“That’s why I brought someone who might.”

A second figure entered.

Nora.

Caleb’s face drained.

“What are you doing here?”

She looked terrified.

Martin grabbed her arm.

“Tell him.”

Nora shook her head.

Martin pressed the weapon against her side.

“Tell him.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

Caleb felt betrayed all over again.

Then Nora looked directly at him.

And blinked twice.

The signal Torres had established.

She was wired.

Martin didn’t know.

“You said Sophie knew where the key was,” Martin hissed.

“She does.”

Caleb stood.

Martin raised the gun.

“Sit down.”

Caleb obeyed.

Nora’s voice shook.

“Martin, you said nobody else would get hurt.”

“That was before you became sentimental.”

“You promised me.”

“You drugged your husband for three years. Don’t suddenly develop a conscience.”

Caleb watched Nora absorb the words.

“Yes.”

Her voice changed.

“I did.”

Martin frowned.

“And I’m going to spend the rest of my life regretting it.”

She stepped backward.

“You, however, won’t have that problem.”

“What does that mean?”

Red and blue lights exploded through the windows.

Martin spun.

Police shouted from every entrance.

He grabbed Nora.

The gun pressed beneath her chin.

Caleb moved without thinking.

Martin fired.

Glass shattered.

Nora screamed.

Caleb hit Martin from the side.

The gun slid across the hardwood floor.

Officers flooded the room.

Within seconds Martin was pinned beneath three detectives.

Caleb lay on the floor, ears ringing.

Nora crawled toward him.

“Caleb?”

“I’m okay.”

She touched her neck.

No blood.

The bullet had struck the window.

Martin was dragged upright.

For the first time, his calm mask was gone.

“You think this ends anything?” he shouted. “You have no idea what your father did!”

Caleb stood slowly.

Martin smiled.

“Ask Nora.”

Caleb looked at her.

Nora’s face had turned white.

“Ask her why Adrian really kept that key.”

Martin was taken outside.

Torres entered moments later.

“We got the confession.”

Caleb barely heard her.

He looked at Nora.

“What was he talking about?”

She shook her head.

“Caleb…”

“What was my father hiding?”

Nora swallowed.

“The vault isn’t about money.”

“Then what is it?”

May you like

Her answer came quietly.

“Your mother.”
