Chapter 6 - Chloe’s Broken Safety Net

The patio of Café Madeleine on Elm Street was packed with the Tuesday mid-morning brunch crowd. Wealthy socialites, corporate attorneys on late coffee breaks, and university students clinked mimosa flutes beneath striped canvas awnings.

Chloe sat at the prime corner table, her oversized dark sunglasses failing to conceal the red puffiness around her eyes.

She had spent the night sleeping on an uncomfortable pull-out sofa in a cheap two-star motel off the turnpike after Leo’s corporate card declined at the Four Seasons. Her silk top was wrinkled, her hair unwashed, pulled into a messy knot that lacked its usual salon gloss. Across from her, two of her sorority friends picked at their avocado toast, casting uneasy glances at the three large shopping bags Chloe had dragged between their chairs.

"I’m telling you, it’s a temporary banking glitch," Chloe said loudly, laughing with an edge of shrill panic as she tapped her manicured nails on the table. "Leo’s corporate accountant mixed up the portfolio sub-accounts while transferring funds from the Tokyo branch. It happens all the time with high-tier private equity. By noon, my platinum line will be wide open."

"Right," her friend Vanessa said, sipping her iced matcha latte. "It’s just weird, Chloe. You asked me to Venmo you twenty bucks for parking. You’ve never asked for twenty dollars in your life."

"Because my physical wallet was locked in the master suite!" Chloe snapped, her defense mechanism instantly kicking into gear. "Nora had a hysterical episode—honestly, she’s so unstable—and she threw a tantrum because she can't handle the domestic expectations of married life. Mom had to step in, and Leo just needs a day to calm her down."

She picked up her phone, frantically refreshing her mobile banking portal for the twentieth time that morning.

The screen blinked. Still red.

"Excuse me, miss?"

A tall, stocky man wearing a navy windbreaker and mirrored aviator sunglasses stood at the perimeter of the café patio. Beside him stood a uniformed local police officer and a flatbed tow truck idling at the curb with its yellow hazard lights flashing.

Chloe lowered her sunglasses, her face hardening into an arrogant sneer. "Can I help you? We're in the middle of a private conversation."

"Are you Chloe Hastings?" the man asked, holding up a clip-board with a laminated repossession order.

Chloe’s heart gave a violent, sickening lurch. "Yes. What is this?"

"I’m with Tri-County Asset Recovery, contracted by Hastings Capital Logistics LLC," the man stated, his voice booming across the quiet patio. Several patrons at nearby tables turned their heads, their forks hovering mid-bite. "We have an active repossession warrant for the 2025 Mercedes-Benz CLE Coupe parked in space four. The corporate lease agreement has been terminated for unauthorized commercial use and non-payment."

Vanessa gasped, covering her mouth.

Chloe surged out of her wicker chair, knocking her silver water tumbler onto the flagstone pavers with a sharp clatter. "What?! That is my car! My brother pays for that car! You cannot touch that vehicle, do you hear me?! I’ll have you fired by lunch!"

"The vehicle title belongs to Hastings Capital, ma'am," the police officer stepped forward, resting a thumb on his duty belt. "The managing partner submitted notarized revocation documents this morning at 8:00 AM, along with notice of unauthorized driver status. If you do not hand over the key fob immediately, you will be cited for obstruction and unlawful possession of corporate property."

"No!" Chloe’s voice cracked into an embarrassing squeak. The entire outdoor section of the café went dead silent, phone cameras discreetly tilting in her direction. "Call Leo! Let me call my brother! This is a mistake! My mother will sue every single one of you into bankruptcy!"

"Your mother is currently being processed at the county intake facility, miss," the officer replied, his voice completely deadpan.

A collective gasp rippled through the brunch crowd.

Chloe froze. The blood drained from her face so fast that she stumbled against the wrought-iron table, her knees knocking against the metal. "What did you say?"

"Agnes Hastings was taken into custody two hours ago on a felony assault warrant," the officer said, pulling a carbon-copy receipt from the repo agent's clipboard. "Now, miss: hand over the keys, or step aside so the tow operator can engage the wheel lifts."

Tears of pure, blinding humiliation spilled over Chloe’s cheeks. She looked around the patio. Her friends were staring at her with wide, horrified eyes, shifting their chairs away as if bankruptcy and criminal charges were airborne pathogens. The strangers at the adjoining tables were whispering behind napkins, several already uploading footage of the breakdown to their Instagram stories.

Trembling with rage and shame, Chloe dug into her canvas bag, pulled out the heavy chrome Mercedes fob, and hurled it onto the pavement at the repo driver’s feet.

"Take it!" she screamed, her voice cracking. "Take the damn car! I hope you choke on it!"

The agent picked up the fob without a word, clicked the remote unlock, and gave the tow truck driver a hand signal. Within seconds, the sleek white convertible was lifted into the air, its hazard lights flashing rhythmically as the hydraulic arm hoisted it onto the flatbed.

Chloe stood on the sidewalk with her three designer shopping bags, abandoned in front of everyone who had envied her for four years, holding a phone that had zero cellular data remaining on a dead family plan.
