Chapter 9 - The Fall of the House of Justice

The broken section of floor dropped into darkness beneath Lily.

She caught the edge with both hands.

I threw myself forward and grabbed her wrist.

Concrete collapsed around us.

Behind me, Vincent shouted that the ceiling was coming down.

“I have you,” I told her.

Lily’s fingers slipped.

Her strength was gone. She had been beaten, drugged, tied, and dragged through half the city.

Still, she fought.

Rachel dropped beside me and caught Lily’s other arm.

For one impossible second, the three of us remained connected across the broken floor.

Father.

Mother.

Daughter.

A family that had lost nineteen years and might now lose everything else.

“Pull!” Vincent shouted.

We lifted together.

Lily rolled onto solid concrete as another explosion shook the chamber.

I covered her with my body.

Dust and debris filled the air.

Monroe’s officers led us into the service tunnel.

Behind us, a section of the courthouse collapsed into the underground chamber with a sound like thunder.

We ran until the tunnel reached the abandoned subway platform.

Emergency lights flashed red along the walls.

Monroe counted survivors.

Lily.

Rachel.

Vincent.

Noah’s sister.

Two witnesses.

Brandon Hale and Tyler Whitmore had surrendered and followed the officers out.

Senator Hale emerged with blood across her coat, screaming her son’s name.

Brandon was alive.

Thomas Whitmore was missing.

Richard, Ethan, and Arthur had not reached the platform.

Monroe looked at the damaged tunnel.

“No one goes back.”

I handed Lily to Rachel.

Then I turned toward the smoke.

Rachel caught my sleeve.

“Michael.”

“Richard knows where the real ledger is.”

“So does Arthur.”

“And Ethan is still inside.”

Her grip tightened.

“He attacked our daughter.”

“He is nineteen.”

“He would have killed her.”

“Yes.”

“Then why go back?”

I looked at Lily.

She sat against the wall, pale and shaking beneath an officer’s coat.

Her eyes met mine.

Please don’t become someone I wouldn’t recognize.

“Because Richard left him.”

I entered the tunnel with Vincent beside me.

“You should stay,” I said.

“You have been telling me that for thirty years.”

We moved carefully through the debris.

The main chamber had partially collapsed.

Fire burned near the vault.

A voice called from beneath a broken beam.

Ethan.

We found him trapped near the wall. Blood ran from a cut across his forehead. One leg was pinned beneath concrete.

When he saw me, terror filled his face.

“Don’t.”

I knelt beside the beam.

“Don’t what?”

“Kill me.”

“If I wanted you dead, I would leave.”

He stared at me.

Vincent positioned a metal bar beneath the concrete.

Together, we lifted enough for Ethan to drag his leg free.

He cried out and collapsed.

“Where is your father?”

Ethan pointed toward the vault.

“He went after Arthur.”

“And the real ledger?”

“I don’t know.”

“You told Lily her mother stole something.”

“My father said Rebecca Lane was Rachel Walker. He said Lily would know where she hid the evidence.”

“You attacked her for information you didn’t understand.”

His expression twisted.

“She embarrassed me.”

“So you believed you had the right to destroy her.”

He looked away.

“My father always fixed things.”

“Not this time.”

A gunshot sounded inside the vault.

We moved toward it.

Richard stood beside an open metal cabinet, pistol raised.

Arthur sat against the wall, blood spreading across his shirt.

The black ledger lay on the floor between them.

Richard aimed at us.

“Stay back.”

“You left your son to die,” I said.

“He is weak.”

Behind us, Ethan heard every word.

His face went still.

Richard continued.

“You understand. Empires require sacrifice.”

“That is what cowards call the people they abandon.”

Arthur laughed weakly.

Richard kicked him.

“Where is the original?”

Arthur looked toward me.

“Rachel never trusted the vault.”

“Where did she put it?”

“She separated the evidence. The names are here. The financial codes are in the tapes. The original signatures…”

He coughed.

“…are inside Lily’s research.”

I remembered Lily’s notebook.

The account numbers.

The copied documents.

She had unknowingly assembled the final piece.

Richard raised the pistol toward me.

“You should have stayed dead.”

Ethan appeared behind us.

“Dad.”

Richard barely glanced at him.

“Get out of the way.”

“You left me.”

“You were slowing me down.”

“I did everything you told me.”

“And you failed.”

The cruelty in Richard’s voice was effortless.

For years, Ethan had mistaken his father’s approval for love.

Now the illusion shattered.

Richard fired.

Ethan moved first.

He struck his father’s arm.

The bullet hit the ceiling.

Vincent disarmed Richard and drove him against the vault wall.

Ethan stood frozen, staring at his own hands.

Richard looked at him with disgust.

“You pathetic little fool.”

Ethan’s face crumpled.

He had shattered Lily’s jaw because he believed cruelty made him powerful.

Now he looked exactly what he was.

A frightened boy raised by a monster.

Monroe’s officers entered moments later.

They placed Richard in handcuffs.

Arthur remained on the floor.

I knelt beside him.

“Why create the vault?”

“Insurance.”

“Against whom?”

“Everyone.”

“You destroyed our family.”

“No,” he whispered. “I tried to own it.”

His breathing became shallow.

“There is one thing you still don’t understand.”

“What?”

“Rachel was not the only person watching Lily.”

“Who else?”

Arthur smiled faintly.

“Your son.”

The words made no sense.

“I don’t have a son.”

“You did.”

He closed his eyes.

I grabbed his shoulder.

“Arthur.”

No response.

He was still breathing, but unconscious.

Vincent looked at me.

“Could he be lying?”

“Yes.”

But Arthur’s lies always contained enough truth to make them dangerous.

We returned to the platform.

Lily was being placed on a stretcher.

Rachel stood beside her.

Monroe approached me.

“Richard Cole is in custody. Ethan is asking for a lawyer. Brandon Hale and Tyler Whitmore are offering statements against their families.”

“Arthur?”

“Alive. Barely.”

“What about the courthouse?”

“Evacuated before the upper floors collapsed. Several injuries. No confirmed deaths.”

She looked at me carefully.

“Now tell me who Michael D’Amato is.”

Before I could answer, a paramedic called for help.

Lily’s heart monitor accelerated.

Her eyes rolled back.

Rachel screamed her name.

The stretcher team began moving.

A paramedic looked at us.

“She may have internal bleeding.”

We followed them toward the emergency exit.

As Lily disappeared into the ambulance, an officer handed Monroe a recovered phone.

“It belonged to Richard Cole.”

Monroe opened the most recent message.

A photograph appeared on the screen.

A young man stood outside Mercy General.

He was perhaps twenty-five.

Dark hair.

Gray eyes.

My eyes.

May you like

The message beneath the photograph contained four words.

HER BROTHER IS IN POSITION.
