Chapter 8 - What Survived the Fire

The river swallowed the warehouse in smoke and flame.

Rafe carried Finn through the loading doors while Nico’s men dragged Sofia, Declan, Patrick, and Mave toward the armored vehicles.

Behind them, fire consumed eleven years of evidence.

Windows burst outward.

The roof collapsed.

Vincent Colazo disappeared inside the flames.

No body was recovered.

By sunrise, news helicopters circled the river.

The public story described an abandoned warehouse fire connected to illegal weapons.

Rafe knew Vincent’s people would make sure the truth remained buried.

At St. Catherine’s, Finn was placed under cardiac observation.

His heart had endured severe stress during the kidnapping, but the doctors believed he would stabilize.

Mave was less fortunate.

Her decision to leave the hospital had reopened internal bleeding around one fractured rib. She was taken directly into surgery.

Rafe waited outside for four hours.

He did not leave when Sofia was discharged.

He did not leave when Patrick asked to speak with him.

He did not leave when Declan warned him that Vincent might have escaped through a river passage.

Rafe remained in the same chair until Mave’s surgeon appeared.

“She is stable.”

Rafe lowered his head.

Only then did he realize his hands had been shaking.

The surgeon continued. “She cannot keep doing this. Her body has limits, whether she accepts them or not.”

Rafe looked through the glass toward her room.

“I am beginning to understand that.”

Mave woke that evening.

Rafe sat beside her bed.

“You look terrible,” she whispered.

“You look worse.”

“Comforting.”

“You nearly died.”

“I’ve heard.”

“You left a secure vehicle and entered a burning warehouse with a collapsed lung.”

“Partially collapsed.”

“That distinction does not help.”

Mave tried to shift and winced.

“Is Finn safe?”

“Yes.”

“Sofia?”

“Safe.”

“Declan?”

“Complaining.”

“Dad?”

Rafe paused.

“Waiting outside.”

Mave closed her eyes.

“I don’t want to see him.”

“He knows.”

“He always knows after it’s too late.”

Rafe studied her face.

“When my father died, Vincent gave me someone to blame before I had time to grieve.”

“The Morettis.”

“Yes.”

“You hurt them.”

“I destroyed most of their family.”

Mave looked at him.

“Were they innocent?”

“Not of everything. But they did not kill my father.”

“What will you do now?”

The old answer came first.

Find Vincent.

Make him suffer.

Burn every person who helped him.

But Rafe remembered carrying Finn away while the evidence burned.

“I don’t know.”

Mave’s gaze softened.

“That may be the first honest thing you’ve said.”

He leaned back.

“I have been honest with you.”

“You told me people talk too much when I asked whether you owned half the harbor.”

“I own forty-three percent.”

A tired laugh escaped her before pain stopped it.

Rafe reached for the water on her bedside table.

She took a sip.

“Thank you.”

“For the water?”

“For choosing Finn.”

“There was no choice.”

“There is always a choice.”

He looked at her.

Mave had thrown herself in front of a baton because every other person in the restaurant chose not to move.

She knew more about choice than anyone he had met.

A knock sounded.

Declan entered using a cane.

His wound had been treated, but anger held him more rigidly than pain.

“We have a problem.”

Rafe stood.

“What?”

“The ledger from the bank is gone.”

Mave’s eyes widened.

“Nico had it.”

“Nico was injured during the rescue. When his men checked the vehicle afterward, the case was missing.”

“Gerald?” Rafe asked.

“In custody.”

“Patrick?”

“Under guard.”

“Vincent?”

Declan looked toward the dark window.

“No body.”

Rafe’s phone rang.

An unknown number appeared.

He answered.

Vincent’s voice came through clearly.

“You chose the boy.”

Rafe’s expression hardened.

“You are difficult to kill.”

“So are you. Antonio used to say that.”

“Where are you?”

“Close enough to see how quickly your empire begins abandoning you.”

“What do you want?”

“A public announcement that Finn Donovan has no connection to the Colazo family.”

Rafe glanced toward Mave.

“And if I refuse?”

“I release enough of the ledger to destroy judges, officers, and politicians. Then I tell them you possess the remaining evidence.”

“They will come after me.”

“They will come after everyone near you.”

Vincent’s voice became almost gentle.

“The waitress. Her brother. Your sister. The child waiting for a heart.”

Rafe’s grip tightened.

“You will not touch them.”

“I already have.”

The line disconnected.

Seconds later, every television in the hospital switched to a breaking-news report.

A photograph of Rafe appeared beside images of the warehouse fire.

The headline read:

BOSTON BUSINESSMAN LINKED TO HUMAN-TRAFFICKING RECORDS

A reporter announced that leaked documents appeared to identify Rafe Colazo as the owner of shipping routes used by an international criminal network.

Mave stared at the screen.

“He put your name in the ledger.”

Rafe nodded.

“He built the routes beneath my companies.”

Sofia entered, holding her phone.

“Accounts are freezing. Reporters are outside. Three board members resigned.”

Rafe watched his reputation collapse across the television.

Vincent had spent years preparing this moment.

One document appeared on screen bearing Rafe’s signature.

It authorized a shipment moved on the same night three missing women disappeared.

The signature looked genuine.

Rafe had signed hundreds of transport approvals handed to him by Vincent.

“He made me legal cover,” Rafe said.

Declan’s face darkened.

“And now the entire city believes you were the trafficker.”

Mave reached for Rafe’s hand.

He looked down at her fingers around his.

“What happens now?” she asked.

Before Rafe answered, Finn’s heart monitor alarm sounded in the adjoining room.

Nurses rushed past them.

Mave tore back the blanket.

A doctor shouted for the crash cart.

Rafe entered behind the medical team.

Finn lay unconscious as the rhythm on the screen collapsed into chaos.

The doctor began compressions.

Mave stood in the doorway, unable to move.

Rafe held her upright.

After forty-seven seconds, Finn’s heart began beating again.

The doctor looked toward Mave.

“His condition is worsening. He may not survive another episode.”

“When will a heart become available?” she whispered.

“We don’t know.”

Outside the window, cameras gathered beneath the hospital lights.

Inside the room, Rafe watched Finn fight for each breath.

His phone displayed another message from Vincent.

Clear my name publicly, or the child dies waiting.

Attached was a confidential list of transplant donors.

May you like

Vincent had gained access to the system.

And one compatible heart had just become available.
