Chapter 6 - Linda’s Final Betrayal

Ethan pulled against the restraints.

“Mom, tell her the truth.”

Linda stood beside Martin with both hands pressed against her coat.

“I didn’t know they would hurt you.”

“You gave them my location!”

“I was trying to fix this.”

“By tying me to a chair?”

“Calvin did that. Not me.”

Calvin leaned against a pallet, the pistol still in his hand.

“Family arguments are exhausting.”

I looked at Martin.

“What did you promise her?”

Martin smiled.

“Linda came to me this morning. She was concerned that Ethan would cooperate with investigators to protect himself.”

Linda’s face crumpled.

“I knew he would blame me.”

“You deserved blame,” Ethan said.

“I was trying to give you a future!”

“You were trying to make me rich enough to support you.”

Linda flinched.

Martin gestured toward the controlled phone.

“Let us avoid emotional distractions. You will log into Hartwell’s vendor portal and approve Meridian’s access.”

“And then?”

“Your husband goes home.”

“What happens to me?”

“That depends on whether you behave intelligently.”

The warehouse seemed to grow colder.

I kept my voice even.

“You know Hartwell reset the system.”

“Of course.”

“Then you know the login will be monitored.”

“Not through the device we are using.”

Calvin removed a laptop from a metal case.

It was connected to several small network devices.

Martin nodded toward me.

“Your fingerprint and facial verification will complete the process. The authorization code will be generated on your phone.”

I glanced at Ethan.

His left eye was swollen. Blood had dried near his temple.

Despite everything he had done, I could see shame in his expression.

“Don’t do it,” he said.

Calvin struck him across the mouth.

Linda screamed.

I took one step forward, but Martin raised a hand.

“Calvin has limited patience.”

“You said no one would be seriously hurt,” Linda whispered.

Martin looked at her with mild irritation.

“And you said Rachel would cooperate immediately.”

Linda turned toward me.

“Please, Rachel. Just approve it. Once the contract goes through, Martin can recover the money. The bank will be paid. Ethan won’t lose his job. We can undo all of this.”

I stared at her in disbelief.

“You still think this is about recovering your investment?”

“It can be fixed.”

“You forged my identity, compromised my career, and helped abduct your own son.”

“I did not abduct him!”

“You brought him here.”

“He was going to tell the police everything!”

“Because everything needed to be told.”

Linda’s expression hardened for the first time.

“You have always judged us.”

“I trusted you.”

“No. You tolerated us because you enjoyed being the successful one.”

Her words sounded like Ethan’s.

I realized she had spent years feeding his resentment because my income benefited her while my independence threatened her.

Martin stepped between us.

“Enough.”

He opened the laptop.

The Hartwell login page appeared.

“Place your finger on the scanner.”

I moved slowly toward the table.

Inside my shoe, the tracking device pressed against my heel.

The police were listening unless the warehouse walls blocked the signal.

I needed Martin to reveal enough evidence before they entered.

“Why Meridian?” I asked.

“Business.”

“Whose business?”

“Rachel.”

“You need my cooperation. Give me a reason to believe Ethan will survive.”

Martin studied me.

Then he nodded toward Calvin.

Calvin lowered the pistol slightly.

“Meridian controls three warehouses and a private freight network,” Martin explained. “Hartwell’s contract would make the company highly valuable.”

“And you own Meridian?”

“Through appropriate entities.”

“Calvin supplies internal data. You design the bids. Hartwell pays inflated fees, and you divide the profit.”

Calvin smiled.

“You understand quickly.”

“You used my credentials to hide Calvin’s activity.”

Martin’s expression suggested approval.

“Your rapid promotion made you an ideal subject. Ambitious executives attract suspicion.”

“And the loan?”

“A separate opportunity.”

“No. It connected Ethan to me and gave you leverage over my family.”

Martin’s eyes narrowed slightly.

“You were supposed to approve the original Milwaukee project. Calvin believed your desire for advancement would make you cooperative.”

“I rejected it.”

“You became inconvenient.”

“So you built evidence to frame me.”

“Insurance,” Calvin said.

Ethan stared at him.

“You told us Rachel’s approval was guaranteed.”

Calvin laughed.

“You were useful because you were insecure and greedy. Nothing was guaranteed.”

Ethan lowered his head.

Martin tapped the scanner.

“Your finger.”

I placed my index finger on the device.

A light flashed.

The system requested facial verification.

I looked into the laptop camera.

The screen displayed a progress circle.

Then the authorization page opened.

Calvin exhaled.

Martin leaned closer.

“Enter the rotating code.”

The controlled phone displayed six digits.

I entered the first five.

Then I stopped.

Martin’s voice became quiet.

“Finish.”

“Release Ethan first.”

“No.”

“One digit for his freedom.”

Calvin lifted the gun.

“You are not negotiating.”

“I am the only person who can complete this.”

Linda stepped toward me.

“Rachel, stop being stubborn.”

I turned on her.

“You demanded three thousand dollars a month because you thought I was weak enough to pay for the privilege of staying married.”

“This has nothing to do with that now.”

“It has everything to do with it. You have spent your life treating love like a transaction. You raised Ethan to believe marriage was a competition. You handed criminals my identity because you wanted a return on your own son.”

Linda slapped me.

The sound cracked across the warehouse.

Ethan shouted at her.

Martin grabbed Linda’s wrist before she could strike again.

His patience had vanished.

“You have caused enough problems.”

For the first time, Linda looked directly at him and understood she had never been his partner.

She had always been disposable.

Sirens sounded faintly in the distance.

Calvin turned toward the loading entrance.

Martin stared at me.

“You brought them.”

I removed my finger from the scanner.

“You brought them when you threatened my family.”

He grabbed my coat and tore at the seam.

The transmitter fell to the floor.

Calvin raised his pistol toward me.

Ethan threw his body sideways, tipping the chair into Calvin’s legs.

The gun fired.

Linda screamed.

The bullet struck a metal support beam above us.

I grabbed the laptop and hurled it toward Martin. It hit his shoulder, knocking him backward.

The loading doors exploded inward.

Police flooded the warehouse.

“Drop the weapon!”

Calvin dragged Ethan upright and pressed the pistol against his neck.

Officers stopped.

Martin moved toward a side door.

Linda seized his arm.

“You said you would protect us!”

He shoved her to the floor.

That delay was enough.

Two officers tackled him before he reached the exit.

Calvin tightened his grip on Ethan.

“I will shoot him!”

Ethan looked at me across the warehouse.

His expression was strangely calm.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

Then he drove his heel down on Calvin’s foot and dropped his full weight.

The gun moved away from his neck.

A tactical officer fired.

Calvin collapsed.

For several seconds, no one breathed.

Then officers rushed toward Ethan.

I stood frozen beside the broken laptop as Martin was handcuffed and dragged past me.

He stopped long enough to whisper, “You think this proves your innocence?”

I looked directly into his eyes.

“It proves yours.”

He smiled despite the blood on his lip.

“No, Rachel. Your employee account contains more than stolen files.”

Police pulled him away.

I watched him disappear through the loading door.

On the floor beside the shattered laptop, a small storage drive blinked with a green light.

One of the investigators picked it up.

“What is that?” I asked.

May you like

He examined the label.

It contained my name.
