Chapter 10 - The Public Reckoning

By Monday morning, the storm had fully broken over the high-society enclaves of North Shore Chicago.

What began as an internal forensic investigation at Apex Global Ventures transformed into a full-scale public spectacle. The Assistant U.S. Attorney, armed with the wire fraud evidence and the freshly recorded witness intimidation attempt from my phone call with Richard, unsealed a massive 18-count federal indictment.

The charges were brutal: Wire Fraud, Money Laundering, Extortion, and Obstruction of Justice.

Because of the high profile of Apex’s investor portfolio, the local news stations devoured every detail. At 7:00 AM, while packing school lunches for Noah and Maya, the kitchen television screen flashed an urgent update:

"LOCAL FINANCIER ARRESTED IN $4.2M EMBEZZLEMENT SCHEME: PROSECUTORS CITIZEN FORENSIC AUDIT AS KEY EVIDENCE."

On screen, footage played of Richard being escorted into the federal courthouse, wearing a dark suit without a tie, his face turned sharply away from the flashing cameras. Standing right behind him, her eyes hidden behind oversized designer sunglasses, was Vanessa.

She looked entirely hollowed out. Gone was the immaculate, polished socialite who had sneered at me over wine at Thanksgiving. As reporters shoved microphones into her face, asking if she knew her lifestyle was funded by stolen investor funds, she stumbled over her high heels, nearly falling into the court steps before Richard’s legal team pushed her through the revolving doors.

My phone chimed with a notification from a private Facebook group—the Lake Forest Country Club & Community Association, a tight-knit digital circle where my sister and parents had spent years curating their pristine social status.

The comment section was an absolute bloodbath.

“Can’t believe Vanessa Vance kept acting like royalty while her husband was stealing millions!”

“Did you see they’re foreclosing on the house? Everything was bought on stolen money!”

“I heard her parents were involved in the secondary shell fund too. Absolute grifters.”

The very people my parents and Vanessa had lived to impress—the country club crowd, the wealthy neighborhood gossips, the mothers at Caleb’s private academy—had turned on them in a matter of hours. The status they had worshipped, the image they had sacrificed their own family’s dignity to preserve, was shattered beyond repair.

At noon, I received a call from the principal at Caleb’s private school.

"Ms. Vance? This is Principal Harrington," her voice sounded strained. "I know this is an unusual request, but your sister, Vanessa, is currently in my office causing quite a disturbance. She was asked to pull Caleb from the afternoon assembly due to... safety concerns regarding media presence outside our gates."

"Why are you calling me, Principal Harrington?" I asked gently.

"She’s refusing to leave, Ms. Vance. She’s hysterical, demanding that the school issue a public statement defending her family's honor. Your father is with her, and he’s shouting at our administrative staff. We are ten minutes away from calling security." Principal Harrington took a deep breath. "Vanessa mentioned you were her sister. We were hoping you could come de-escalate the situation before local news crews film police arriving at our front steps."

I felt a cold wave of distaste wash over me. Even now, with federal indictments hanging over their heads, they were throwing tantrums at a middle school, clinging frantically to the illusion that they could bully the world into respecting them.

"I won't be coming, Principal Harrington," I said firmly. "My sister and father need to face the reality of their situation. If they are trespassing or harassing your staff, you should call the authorities immediately. Please do not involve my children or me in their public outbursts."

"I... I understand, Ms. Vance," she replied, stunned by my absolute lack of hesitation. "Thank you."

I hung up the phone and leaned back in my office chair.

They had built a house of glass, spent decades throwing stones at everyone else, and were now shocked that the sharp edges were falling on their own heads.
