Chapter 10 - Chloe’s Betrayal

By Tuesday afternoon, the federal net was tightening with terrifying speed.

Luca had taken shelter in a rundown roadside motel off Interstate 85, a far cry from the five-star luxury suites he considered his birthright. The room smelled of stale tobacco and industrial disinfectant. The air conditioner sputtered a pathetic, rattling breeze against the humid autumn heat.

He was frantically trying to call his secondary contacts—political bagmen, dirty lobbyists, offshore corporate service providers—searching for an exit hatch. Every single call went directly to voicemail. The men who had drunk his hundred-dollar scotches at Quail Hollow were treating his name like a contagion.

A sudden, aggressive knock on the flimsy wooden door made Luca jump from the peeling faux-leather armchair.

He peered through the scratched peephole. Standing outside on the concrete walkway was Chloe Ruiz.

Luca yanked the door open, grabbed her by the arm, and pulled her into the room, slamming the door shut and sliding the security chain into place.

“Where the hell have you been?” Luca hissed, his eyes wild and unhinged. “You took the tablet! You gave it to Jessi! Do you have any idea what you did to me? The board removed me! The bank froze my accounts!”

Chloe yanked her arm free from his grip. She was dressed in plain jeans, an oversized beige trench coat, and dark sunglasses. Her manicured nails were gone, bitten down to the quick. She looked exhausted, haunted, and completely devoid of the sultry glamour she had weaponized over the past eleven months.

“Don't you dare touch me, Luca,” she said, her voice trembling but cold. “You lied to me. You used my name on shell corporations to hide illegal payments. Did you think I was just going to sit in Charlotte and wait for the FBI to kick down my door?”

Luca’s expression morphed into a grotesque parody of his former charm. He reached out, trying to cup her cheek. “Chloe, baby, listen to me. It was a mistake. I was trying to protect our future. I set up that Delaware entity so we could buy the villa in St. Barts without Jessi’s forensic accountants tracing the funds. I did it for us!”

Chloe took two steps back, shaking her head in total revulsion. “Stop it. Just stop talking. Your voice makes me sick.”

Luca’s hand fell to his side. His voice dropped into a venomous whisper. “You betrayed me. You handed over my unencrypted messages. Without that tablet, they had circumstantial accounting irregularities. With that tablet, they have intent for municipal bribery.”

“I didn't just hand over the tablet, Luca,” Chloe said, pulling a folded sheet of paper from her trench coat pocket.

Luca’s eyes locked onto the document. The top of the page bore the blue-and-gold letterhead of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of North Carolina.

“What is that?” Luca whispered.

“It’s a formal proffer agreement,” Chloe said, her voice shaking with a terrifying finality. “I spent seven hours in a deposition room with two Assistant United States Attorneys and three forensic investigators from the IRS Criminal Investigation Division yesterday.”

Luca’s knees visibly buckled. “You... you took a deal?”

“I took a cooperation agreement,” she corrected him, her eyes welling with bitter tears. “They had every bank wire, Luca. They had the invoices for the Cartier bracelet, the luxury hotel bookings in Miami, and the transfer memos for the zoning kickbacks. The prosecutors told me that if I didn't cooperate fully, I was facing ten to fifteen years for wire fraud and conspiracy to commit municipal bribery.”

“You sold me out to save your own skin!” Luca roared, lunging toward her with his fists clenched.

Chloe didn't flinch. She simply pointed toward the window facing the motel parking lot.

“Look outside, Luca,” she said quietly.

Luca turned and pulled back the dusty plastic blinds.

Three unmarked black Chevrolet Suburbans were parked in a diagonal row across the motel driveway, effectively sealing off every exit to the street. Half a dozen agents wearing dark windbreakers with yellow lettering across their backs—FBI and IRS-CI—were stepping out of the vehicles, tactical holsters visible beneath their jackets.

Luca dropped the blind. The blood drained completely from his face, leaving his skin the color of wet concrete.

“You wore a wire,” Luca breathed, staring at her chest in utter horror.

Chloe reached beneath the collar of her trench coat, slowly detached a tiny black micro-transmitter taped to her collarbone, and set it on the nightstand beside the Gideon Bible.

“Jessi was right about you,” Chloe whispered as the heavy sound of combat boots began marching up the exterior stairs. “You never loved anyone. You just wanted an audience to applaud while you stole everything they had.”

She turned, unlocked the deadbolt, and stepped out onto the balcony with her hands raised high in the air.

Behind her, the motel door was kicked off its hinges with a deafening crash.
