Chapter 6 - A Son Turns Against His Father

Daniel did not take the flash drive immediately.

He looked at Ethan.

“You understand what you’re asking?”

“Yes.”

“No. I don’t think you do.”

Daniel stepped down from the porch.

“If that drive contains evidence of crimes committed by your father, this is no longer a family argument.”

“I know.”

“Lawyers get involved.”

“I know.”

“Regulators.”

“Yes.”

“Possibly prosecutors.”

Ethan swallowed.

“Yes.”

“And your last name won’t protect you from being questioned.”

“I don’t want it to.”

Daniel finally took the drive.

Claire watched Ethan.

Part of her wanted to believe this was the moment he changed.

Another part remembered how many times she had mistaken guilt for courage.

Daniel called Michael Brennan.

Within an hour, Michael arrived with a forensic accountant.

They opened the drive on an isolated laptop.

Folders filled the screen.

Warehouse transfers.

Loan documents.

Internal emails.

Copies of Carter Agricultural pricing files.

Then one folder labeled E.W.

Ethan Whitmore.

Ethan’s face went pale.

“What is that?”

Michael opened it.

Inside were authorization documents bearing Ethan’s electronic signature.

Approvals for transfers.

Vendor access requests.

Loan-related certifications.

Ethan shook his head.

“I didn’t sign those.”

The forensic accountant leaned closer.

“Some signatures appear digitally authenticated.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means either you approved them…”

He looked at Ethan.

“…or someone had access to your authentication credentials.”

Claire folded her arms tightly.

Again.

His credentials.

Again, his name.

Again, Richard’s hands somehow remained clean.

Ethan looked devastated.

“My father set me up.”

Michael didn’t respond.

“Didn’t he?”

“We don’t know yet.”

But everyone in the room was thinking the same thing.

Richard Whitmore had not merely hidden debt from his son.

He had positioned Ethan to absorb responsibility if everything collapsed.

At noon the next day, Richard’s black sedan arrived at the Carter farm.

He came alone.

No driver.

No lawyer.

Richard stepped out wearing a charcoal suit and polished shoes that sank slightly into the damp soil.

Daniel was waiting beside the barn.

Claire watched from the porch.

Ethan stood inside near the kitchen window.

Richard had no idea his son was there.

Daniel walked toward him.

“Richard.”

“Daniel.”

Richard glanced toward the farmhouse.

“So this is where Claire grew up.”

“Yes.”

Richard looked across hundreds of acres stretching toward the horizon.

Grain silos rose beyond the hills.

Two semi-trucks were being loaded near a processing building in the distance.

What Richard had always imagined as a small family farm was clearly only one piece of a much larger operation.

For the first time, he understood how completely he had underestimated the Carters.

“You wanted terms,” Richard said.

Daniel nodded.

“I’m prepared to temporarily continue supply.”

Richard relaxed slightly.

“Good.”

“Under conditions.”

“There are always conditions.”

“First, market pricing. No preferred discounts.”

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“Second, thirty-day payment terms.”

“Fine.”

“Third, your company provides Carter Agricultural access to independent financial assurance regarding payment capacity.”

Richard stared at him.

“Absolutely not.”

“Then we’re finished.”

Daniel turned.

Richard stopped him.

“What else?”

Daniel faced him again.

“You step away from purchasing and supplier negotiations while we investigate unauthorized access to Carter systems.”

Richard’s face changed.

“Investigate what?”

Daniel watched him carefully.

That tiny pause told him something.

Richard knew.

“My company’s confidential files were accessed using credentials from Whitmore Food Distribution.”

Richard scoffed.

“And you assume that was me?”

“I didn’t say your name.”

Richard realized his mistake.

Before he could recover, the farmhouse door opened.

Ethan stepped outside.

Richard stared at him.

“What are you doing here?”

Ethan walked across the yard.

“Trying to find out how much of my life you forged.”

Richard’s expression hardened.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“I saw the files.”

“What files?”

“The ones with my electronic signatures.”

Richard said nothing.

Ethan came closer.

“You used my name.”

“I protected this company.”

“You framed me.”

“Don’t be dramatic.”

Claire walked off the porch.

Richard saw her.

His eyes narrowed.

“This is what you wanted?”

Claire stopped beside Ethan.

“I wanted my husband to defend his family.”

Richard looked at his son.

“And you think betraying your father makes you a man?”

Ethan flinched.

Then Claire felt his hand reach for hers.

He held it.

Not tightly.

But openly.

Richard noticed.

Ethan said, “No.”

His voice was quiet.

“Protecting my daughter does.”

Richard’s face became almost unrecognizable.

“You think Carter will save you?”

“I’m not asking him to.”

“You have no career without me.”

“Then I’ll build one.”

“No inheritance.”

“Keep it.”

“No company.”

“I don’t want one that requires me to become you.”

Richard’s hand moved so quickly Claire barely saw it.

He slapped Ethan across the face.

Susan gasped from the porch.

Claire stepped forward.

Daniel stopped her with one hand.

Ethan slowly turned his face back toward his father.

A red mark appeared on his cheek.

Richard pointed at him.

“You ungrateful little coward.”

Ethan laughed once.

Tears filled his eyes.

“That’s the first honest thing you’ve called me.”

Richard stormed toward his car.

Then Daniel spoke.

“One more thing.”

Richard stopped.

Daniel’s voice carried across the yard.

“I know about Natalie Pierce.”

Richard went completely still.

Ethan saw it.

Claire saw it.

Daniel saw it.

Richard slowly turned.

“Who?”

Daniel smiled without warmth.

“That reaction was enough.”

Richard got into his car.

He drove away without another word.

That evening, he returned home and locked himself in his office.

Margaret knocked twice.

He ignored her.

He opened the hidden cabinet.

The folders were still there.

But something was wrong.

The folder labeled ETHAN was open.

Richard was certain he had closed it.

He searched the pages.

Then he realized one document was missing.

A loan guarantee.

The one carrying Ethan’s forged signature.

Richard stood frozen.

Someone had been inside his office.

Then he heard a floorboard creak in the hallway.

He opened the door.

No one.

Only darkness.

Richard returned to his desk.

His phone lit up.

Unknown number.

A message appeared.

You should have left Claire Carter alone.

Richard stared at the screen.

May you like

Then another message arrived.

Because now everyone is looking.
