Chapter 3 - The Gala Below

In the grand ballroom on the ground floor of Whitestone Medical Center, Grant Mercer raised a glass of Dom Pérignon, basking in the reverence of Chicago’s financial elite.

His bespoke tuxedo fit him like armor. At thirty-four, he was the face of Mercer-Hawthorne Global, celebrated as the visionary who turned old Midwestern steel into modern green logistics. But behind the sharp jawline and charismatic smile was an insatiable vanity—and a mountain of undisclosed debt.

Beside him, Ava Carlisle leaned in close, her hand resting deliberately on his lapel. The 18-karat diamond teardrops caught the amber light of the chandeliers, sparkling with historic brilliance. Several wives of board members were whispering by the ice sculptures, their eyes darting between Ava’s neck and Grant’s wedding band, but none dared speak up. In Grant’s circle, power dictated reality.

“You did well at the podium, darling,” Ava whispered, her voice laced with honey. “The press is already running the story. ‘Grant Mercer announces $50 million hospital wing in honor of his growing family.’ It paints you as the devoted patriarch.”

“Public relations is an art form, Ava,” Grant smirked, taking a slow sip. “Emma’s family thought they could control me with their archaic trust funds forever. But once this wing opens and the hospital board shifts their endowment accounts to my private hedge fund, Arthur Hawthorne’s legacy belongs entirely to me.”

“And what about Emma?” Ava asked, touching the sparkling diamond earring dangling from her lobe. “What if she finds out about the offshore transfers before the baby arrives?”

Grant chuckled, a low, dismissive sound. “Emma is weak. She’s upstairs lying in bed, terrified of losing this pregnancy. She doesn’t have the stomach for business, let alone a confrontation. By the time she recovers from childbirth, the restructuring papers will already be filed. She won’t have a single share left.”

Suddenly, the heavy oak doors at the back of the ballroom swung open with a resounding thud.

The jazz quartet faltered. The chatter in the room instantly died away.

Walking down the center aisle was Nolan Brooks, flanked by four uniformed officers from the Cook County Sheriff’s Department and two private security operatives in dark suits. Nolan carried a thick leather briefcase, his expression carved from stone.

Grant’s smile hardened into a mask of annoyance. He set his champagne glass on a passing waiter’s tray and stepped forward, smoothing his jacket.

“Nolan,” Grant said smoothly, projecting his voice so the surrounding donors could hear. “I wasn’t aware you were attending tonight. If you’re looking for Emma, she’s resting upstairs. Let’s not cause a scene among our benefactors.”

Nolan didn’t stop until he was two feet from Grant. He didn't offer a hand.

“I am not here for social pleasantries, Mr. Mercer,” Nolan said, his baritone voice echoing through the silent ballroom. “I am here on behalf of the Hawthorne Family Trust and your wife, Emma Mercer.”

Ava stepped back slightly, her hand flying instinctively to the diamonds at her ears.

Grant’s eyes narrowed. “Whatever legal nonsense Emma is confused about can wait until morning. We have guests.”

“There will be no morning for your position at this firm,” Nolan replied coldly. He reached into his coat and produced a set of court-ordered injunctions. “Grant Mercer, by the explicit authority of the Hawthorne Trust charter and Section 9 of the marital covenant—the Hawthorne Clause—you have been formally removed as Chief Executive Officer of Mercer-Hawthorne Global, effective immediately.”

A collective gasp swept through the ballroom. Cameras from local news outlets, originally brought to film the charity donation, turned instantly toward the stage.

“Are you insane?” Grant hissed, taking a threatening step forward. “I built this company! You can’t touch my shares!”

“Your shares were collateralized against the Hawthorne family assets you illegally transferred to shell accounts in the Cayman Islands,” Nolan stated without blinking. “And furthermore, Officer Davis here is executing an immediate warrant for grand theft and asset freezing.”

Nolan turned his gaze directly toward Ava Carlisle, whose face had drained of all color.

“Including,” Nolan added with icy precision, “the immediate recovery of the Hawthorne family heirloom diamonds currently hanging from that woman’s ears.”
