Chapter 5 - The Queen Retakes Her Throne

Twelve hours after the emergency surgery, the morning sun rose over Lake Michigan, casting golden light across the private recovery suite on the top floor of Whitestone Medical Center.
The room was fortified like a fortress. Two private security guards stood outside the double doors, admitting only hospital personnel and authorized legal council. Baby Grace slept peacefully in a clear bassinet beside my bed, swaddled tightly in soft cotton.
The door swung open quietly, and Nolan Brooks walked in carrying a steaming cup of black coffee and a thick leather folder. Behind him walked my sister, Claire, her eyes red from crying tears of joy as she rushed to my bedside and took my hand.
"How are you feeling, Emma?" Nolan asked, setting the folder on the rolling bedside table.
"Sore. Exhausted. But clearer than I’ve ever been in my life," I said, looking down at the folder. "Give me the damage report."
Nolan pulled up a chair and opened the files. "The fallout is total. By five this morning, the news of Grant’s arrest in the ballroom went international. The video of him being dragged out in handcuffs while Ava Carlisle surrendered your diamonds has over fourteen million views."
"And the board?"
"In complete panic," Nolan smiled thinly. "They held an emergency meeting at seven a.m. With Grant’s personal voting shares impounded under the fraud investigation, the Hawthorne Trust's sixty-two percent controlling stake reverted directly to you as Arthur Hawthorne’s sole surviving heir. The board had no choice. They voted unanimously to ratify Grant's termination."
"What about the money he siphoned?" I asked, flipping through the bank statements.
"We caught it just in time," Nolan explained, tapping a notarized wire transfer log. "Grant tried to route forty-two million dollars through an offshore entity registered under Ava Carlisle’s maiden name last night while you were in labor. Because Linda called me and we triggered the Hawthorne Clause before midnight, the international funds transfer was flagged and intercepted by federal banking authorities. Every cent has been returned to the trust."
Claire leaned over, kissing my forehead. "Ava Carlisle walked into the Cook County State's Attorney's office forty minutes ago. She realized Grant had set her up as the sole signatory on the shell accounts to take the legal fall if things went sideways. She’s singing like a canary to save herself from federal prison."
A sharp knock at the door broke our conversation. One of the security guards stepped inside.
"Mrs. Hawthorne," the guard said respectfully, deliberately using my family name. "Grant Mercer’s criminal defense attorney is in the lobby with a settlement offer and a request for emergency bail posting."

I looked at Grace, sleeping peacefully without a care in the world, completely safe from the man who had abandoned us both.
"Tell his attorney that Emma Hawthorne doesn't negotiate with thieves," I said, my voice cold and unwavering. "If Grant wants to speak to me, he can do it from the witness stand."
